The design and development of cost-effective mobile broadband wireless access networks is a key challenge for many mobile network operators. The over-dimensioning or under-dimensioning of an access network results in both additional costs and customer dissatisfaction. Thushara Weerawardane introduces new transport technologies and features for High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) and Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks. Using advanced scientific methods, he proposes new adaptive flow control and enhanced congestion control algorithms, then defends them with highly-developed analytical models derived from Markov chains. For faster analysis, compared to long-lasting detailed simulations, these models provide optimum network performance and ensure reliable quality standards for end users during transport network congestion. Following the pattern of the Internet growth in popularity, started in the early 1990s, the current unprecedented expansion of wireless technology promises to have an even greater effect on how people communicate and interact, with considerable socio-economic impact all over the world. The driving force behind this growth is the remarkable progress in component miniaturization, integration, and also devel- ments in waveforms, coding, and communication protocols. Besides established infrastructurebased wireless networks (cellular, WLAN, sat- lite) ad-hoc wireless networks emerge as a new platform for distributed applications and for personal communication in scenarios where deploying infrastructure is not feasible. In ad-hoc wireless networks, each node is capable of forwarding packets on behalf of other nodes, so that multi-hop paths provide end-to-end connectivity. The increased flexibility and mobility of ad-hoc wireless networks are favored for appli- tions in law enforcement, homeland defense and military. In a world where wireless networks become increasingly interoperable with each other and with the high-speed wired Internet, personal communication systems will transform into universal terminals with instant access to variate content and able of handle demanding tasks, such as multimedia and real-time video. With users roaming between networks, and with wide variation in wireless link quality even in a single domain, the communications terminal must continue to provide a level of Quality of Service that is acceptable to the user and conforms to a contracted Service Level Agreement.

The symposium on "Worldwide Advances in Communications Networks" which was held on May 14-15, 1992 at GMU was an ambitious attempt to bring together leaders in the communications area to discuss the major issues in this rapidly-changing technology. The symposium was a success and many of the ideas presented at the conference are being implemented. This proceeding contains the majority of the papers presented at the symposium and abstracts of the remainder. The papers may be divided into seven general categories. The first five papers explore some important design issues for high speed networks (gigabit networks). Traffic modelling, quality of service guarantees, switching alternatives, and routing are discussed. The next two papers focus on applications for broadband communications. Weinstein begins by asking, "ARE THERE ANY APPLICATIONS?" and then proceeds to develop a wide variety of potential uses. Personick concentrates on multimedia applications. The next three papers deal with Personal Communications Services (PCS) and the notion of communicating with anyone, at any time, anywhere. Several of the key technical issues such as CDMA vs TDMA are analyzed in detail. The fourth area is satellite communications. Two papers discuss some of the major changes that are taking place and potential new systems. The next two papers discuss signal coding and digital video. Jayant provides an excellent overview of the impressive capabilities that are available for the compression of speech, audio, image, and video signals. Bellisio concentrates on video encoding.
