Excerpt from Higher Schools Universities in Germany "It is expedient for the satisfactory resolution of those educational questions, which are at length beginning seriously to occupy us, both that we should attend to the experience of the Continent, and that we should know precisely what it is which this experience says." So I said in the preface to the first edition of this work, published in 1868. The history of education on the Continent is now regarded in this country with a great and increasing interest, and I republish, therefore, my account of the schools and universities of Germany. I have abstained from attempting to bring the account down to the present time, either by the addition of chapters at the end, or by the insertion of notes and corrections in the body of the work. Excerpt from German Universities: A Review of Prof. Paulsen's Work on the German University System Of course the teacher cannot always replace the book. There is a whole outside world of plain people whose interest in science has nothing to do with schools or controversy or personalities. As things are, school and sect tendencies are very apt to make them selves felt Ih scientific life in Germany, and it is hard (harder than in France or England) for a scientific man to make his way outside University circles. The faithful critic of Die Deutschen Universitaten takes these things into account. But he turns gladly to the bright side. The great reputation of the German Universities was won by services to science only possible to silent delight in the matter itself, loyalty in work and love of truth, and this high and disinterested spirit is the heritage of the German Universities of to - day. Excerpt from University Organization The function of the leading English Universities, then, seems to be to hold examinations and confer degrees, leaving the teach ing to be done by the private tutors attached to the several Col leges. This system is dependent upon the immense endowments of the particular Colleges, and the numerous Fellowships con nected with them, which yield the fortunate holders incomes of from one to two thousand dollars per annum.1 Such prizes un questionably induce hard study, and are the rewards of most rigid examinations; but a system of instruction based on such stimuli is only possible where wealth has already furnished the necessary stimuli. Excerpt from The University of Missouri Bulletin, Vol. 1: An Experimental Study of Methods of Teaching High School German The purpose of this paper is to report some experimental work. done in the University High School, on the methods used and the results obtained in the first years work in German. Since the methods used in this work are related, more or less, to others which I have been in general use in the teaching of modern languages, a brief description of some of these methods will precede the report. Probably one of the first of the methods to be used in teaching, a modern language was the Grammar Method, which is simply an adaptation, or an imitation, of the method so long used in teaching Greek and Latin. According to this method attention is given from the first to the formal side of the language; paradigms and rules and exceptions are memorized apart from any connected reading or conversation in the foreign tongue. When this study of grammar has been completed, the students are allowed to read, but even then the reading is made a basis for further drill in grammar. Composition is also used mainly for grammatical purposes. Careful analysis and translation are required and, as a consequence, the amount of reading done is very small. The foreign language is not spoken and pronunciation is not considered important. The Natural Method is a result of a reaction from the abstract grammar study according to the Grammar Method. Its aim, evidently, is to teach the new language in a way similar to that by which the mother tongue is acquired. The method is oral in character, at least until considerable familiarity with the idiomatic spoken language is attained. In its extreme form it consists of conversations between teacher and pupil, in the foreign language - the use of the mother tongue is not permitted. At a comparatively late period reading is begun and, at a still later period, the study of grammar. The material for composition is taken from the oral work of the class. Another oral method used in modern language teaching is the Psychological Method. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A German Grammar: Schools and Colleges Based on the Public School German Grammar Tms book is based, by arrangement with the author and the original publishers, upon the Public School Grammar, by Dr. A. L. Meissner, of Queen's College, Belfast which has attained great popularity in the United Kingdom. In the present book the material thus furnished has been freely used and, where occasion seemed to require, freely modified. The changed title will, to a great extent, explain the scope of such modifications. The term Public School Grammar would seem to restrict the original design to purely elementary work. In this book the attempt has been made to carry forward the same method so as to include also college and university study - in a word, to meet the wants of students of every grade up to the point where the demand arises for the higher study of historical and scientific gram mar. This higher study, let it be said at once, is not in cluded in the scope of the present work. In carrying out this design there has been on the one hand much condensation, and on the other much expansion, of the original material. The changes in Parts I. And II. Have been both in detail and in arrangement; yet the subject-matter re mains essentially the same. The Syntax (part III.) has been almost wholly rewritten, upon a scale more comprehensive than that of the original work, to meet the more enlarged scope of the present book. Just what should be here ih cluded, and what omitted, is a point on which perhaps no two would agree. The writer, guided by his own experience, has sought to include all that might be important for the student. Excerpt from Education in Bavaria In Bavaria, besides the University Of Munich, there are two other Universities, the one at W'urzburg and the other at Erlangen. These three Universities are supported by ancient endowments, the incomes from which are supple mented by subsidies from the State. In the year 1883 - 84 the State aid amounted to the number Of students in attendance being or about 1 in 678 Of the entire population. In Munich, side by side with the University, exists the well known Polytechnic School, for instruction in science in its application to industry. This institution is co-ordi nate with the University, and its teaching overlaps it in many respects. Without having seen one Of these institu tions, it is almost impossible to realize their vast extent, the beauty Of their construction, the completeness Of their arrangements, and the luxury with which they are fitted. The provision Of Polytechnic Schools in Germany is, however, greatly in excess of the requirements Of the students. This arises from the fact that, When these institutions were first established, Germany was divided into several States, each Of which tried to excel the other in the magnificence Of its schools, and to attract to itself the largest number Of students. In Germany these schools are known by the name Of Technical High Schools, the word High School being synonymous with University The annual cost Of the maintenance of these establish ments is abouta quarter Of a million Of money, and the erection and equipment of them has cost certainly not less than three millions sterling. Excerpt from The German Universities: And University Study This intimate union of investigation and instruction gives the German university its peculiar character. There are excel lent scholars at Oxford and Cambridge, but no one would speak of them as the chief representatives of English scientific achievement. Many of England's most distinguished scholars, men like Darwin, Spencer, Grote, the two Mills, Carlyle, Macaulay, Gibbon, Bentham, Ricardo, Hume, Locke, Shaftes bury, Hobbes, and Bacon, were not connected with the universi ties at all, and of many of them it could be said that they would have been altogether impossible at an English university. But even the English professors are not, in the German sense, the instructors of the students. It is true, they deliver seien tific lectures, but the real instruction is usually left to fellows and tutors. In France, similarly, the scientific investigators, the great scholars, belong to the Academy, to the Institut de France. They are also, perhaps, members of the College de France, or of the Sorbonne, and as such they deliver public lectures, which anyone may attend. But they are not, like the German professors, the actual daily teachers of the students. Nor is it expected, on the other hand, that the members of the different faculties in France, especially in the provinces, Should be independent scientific investigators.
