Can rubber trees, silicone dolls, corpses, soil, subatomic particles, designer shoes, and discarded computers become the protagonists of contemporary literature—and what does this tell us about the relationship between humans and objects? In Things with a History, Héctor Hoyos argues that the roles of objects in recent Latin American fiction offer a way to integrate materialisms old and new, transforming our understanding of how things shape social and political relations. Discussing contemporary authors including Roberto Bolaño, Ariel Magnus, César Aira, and Blanca Wiethüchter as well as classic writers such as Fernando Ortiz and José Eustasio Rivera, Hoyos considers how Latin American literature has cast things as repositories of history, with an emphasis on the radically transformed circulation of artifacts under globalization. He traces a tradition of thought, transcultural materialism, that draws from the capacity of literary language to defamiliarize our place within the tangible world. Hoyos contrasts new materialisms with historical-materialist approaches, exposing how recent tendencies sometimes sidestep concepts such as primitive accumulation, commodity fetishism, and conspicuous consumption, which have been central to Latin American history and literature. He contends that an integrative approach informed by both historical and new materialisms can balance seeing things as a means to reveal the true nature of social relations with appraisals of things in their autonomy. Things with a History simultaneously offers a sweeping account of the material turn in recent Latin American culture and reinvigorates social theory and cultural critique.

In contemporary Brazilian prose, two simultaneous ambitions are often reconciled. This foundation is one of the constants of contemporary prose, without thereby eliminating the continuous existence of a formal experimentalism that is the clearest heir of the modernist project.

The public authorities have not successfully resolved the management of the traumatic memory of the wars, dictatorships and massacres to which the European project was always intended to be a counterpoint. The conflict of memories and the public discourses about the past are latent on ideological, political and cultural levels. However, if in the past the conflict concerning memories tended to develop inside the borders of countries, it has now leapt into the European arena. This has also led to the confrontation and questioning of the great narratives established in the common memory, especially with countries of the East joining the European Union. Each community, group or nation maintains common memories that do not always fit in or converge with a general overall account. The origins of the UB Solidarity Foundation’s European Observatory on Memories lie in these debates, and through this book — which includes the contributions of specialists in multiple disciplines and the speeches that were given at the first international symposium, “Memory and Power: A Transnational Perspective” — it hopes to present some of the key challenges that this conflict of memories has in store for us in the present and in the future.

The polyphonic world poem Galáxias (1984) by Brazilian poet Haroldo de Campos has, to date, mainly been discussed in the broader context of concrete poetry and the Latin American neo-baroque. O mundo ocidental, nas primeiras décadas do século XXI, se vê às voltas com manifestações muito semelhantes às que ocorreram nas décadas de 20 e 30 do século XX. A extrema direita se avoluma, assim como os ingredientes político-econômicos que a estimulavam: crises macroeconômicas, carestia, insegurança de empregos, frustrações de expectativas, de estabilidade, de empregabilidade, de renda, de seguridade social, etc. Como é amplamente reconhecido, o fascismo é, sobretudo, filho do medo e, como decorre desse afeto, seu desdobramento tende a ser a violência. Violência e medo se implicam mutuamente no mundo da consequencialidade comportamental social. O fascismo se apropria de afetos como o recalque, a insegurança, o desamparo e a vulnerabilidade, e os mobiliza em prol do ódio. O ódio que alimenta a organização de movimentos, partidos que prometem amparo, segurança, superioridade. Enfim, são ilusões, mas as ilusões são poderosas pois constroem presentes, constroem a realidade prática que se materializa a partir da ação dos indivíduos.
