Vivíamos en la caverna de Platón, pendientes de los dispositivos digitales en cuyas pantallas contemplábamos las sombras que antiguamente se proyectaban en el muro. Vivíamos ensimismados en un mundo de ficción. Vivíamos anclados en el presente, pues ya no confiábamos en el futuro. Y en esto apareció el coronavirus. Nos impusieron el aislamiento social. Se decretó el cierre de fronteras entre los países. Nos concienciamos de que había que intensificar la higiene, utilizar mascarillas y guantes. Y proliferaron las fotos alarmantes de personas heroicas, protegidas por batas, gafas, mascarillas, guantes y botas, luchando contra algo que no podíamos ver y nos mataba. Después de siglos, una vez más, en todos los continentes, se establecieron las mismas medidas de resistencia contra el "enemigo invisible" de la historia, contra la nueva peste que es la COVID-19. Y comenzaron a circular comentarios, ensayos, artículos y anecdotarios que recordaban la peste negra pero, especialmente, los miedos y angustias sociales de un pasado que, aunque se creía aniquilado, todavía está presente en los escondrijos más recónditos de la mente y la existencia humanas. La ubicuidad absoluta de la globalización, que ya no se limita al intercambio o consumo de productos, propaga miedos e incertidumbres. Otra vez ha irrumpido el pasado, se ha paralizado el presente, hay desconfianza y negación del futuro. ¿Hemos llegado al final de la Historia? ¿Es tiempo de resignación y de nostalgia? Ante la ausencia de proyectos de futuro, ¿la solución es recuperar las utopías del pasado? ¿Son tiempos de retrotopía? Este libro reúne las ponencias presentadas en el IV Coloquio Internacional del Programa Universitario de Estudios Hispano-Chilenos, que llevó por título "Historia y Prospectiva" y se celebró en Valparaíso (Chile) durante los días 14 y 15 de octubre de 2019. Una semana después se produjeron los hechos que llevaron a Chile a una de sus crisis más notables y profundas de todo el siglo xx. A los pocos meses, se desencadenó la crisis del coronavirus que puso al mundo en vilo. ¿Fuimos capaces de prever durante esos días de coloquio lo que se nos venía encima? No de manera específica, pero sí fue nuestro objetivo tratar de visualizar el mañana, imaginar dónde estábamos y, en síntesis, hacer prospectiva. Entonces defendimos que tenemos la capacidad suficiente (e histórica) para, al presentar nuestras preocupaciones, romper con la clásica relación lineal de pasado-presente-futuro históricos; de causas y consecuencias encadenadas. Sostuvimos que el pasado se puede saltar el presente y que lo que pensamos en presente no necesariamente es lo que ocurrirá en el futuro. Nuestras reflexiones estuvieron en el lugar y el momento oportunos. No perdimos tiempo, sino que lo ganamos para imaginar el porvenir.

Education in Revolutionary Struggles introduces us to the fascinating world of Latin American educational thought in the third quarter of the 20th century. It discusses the contributions of three of the most distinguished intellectuals of the period – Iván Illich, Paulo Freire and Ernesto Guevara – and more specifically their answers to the eternal challenge: What is – or should be – the role of education in the profound structural and/or revolutionary transformation of our societies? The first part of the book identifies the cultural, economic and political context of the revolutionary years in Latin America. This historical framework is of particular interest because it is the setting for the intellectual and educational debates in which these three thinkers took part. The second part, the heart of the book, expounds in depth how Iván Illich, Paulo Freire and Ernesto Guevara contributed to understanding of how education is linked to the transformation of society. The third and final part highlights the most fertile dimensions of the educational thought of Iván Illich, Paulo Freire and Ernesto Guevara – deschooling, liberation education and revolutionary education respectively – and analyses the points where their conceptions of "education in revolutionary struggles" converged, complemented one another or diverged.
