Excerpt from Origin and History of the Horse The subject of the origin and history of the horse is not a simple one. It is a very complex one, because every scientific problem, like every financial problem, has its method of attack - from a number of different points of view. The first of the points to consider is that of the horse as the most perfect animal machine among the quadrupeds. Second, we shall see how this ma chine by purely natural processes evolved from comparatively small and simple beginnings. So we shall follow the evolution of a number of structures which make up this machine, and of the horse as a whole. Third, we shall look at the races, the wild breeds of the family of horses, as they are found in Asia and Africa today, because it is possible that some of these breeds throw some considerable light upon the most interesting of questions, the origin and history of this ani mal. Fourth, we come to the point where the history of the horse touches the history of man, and that was a turning point in the history of civilization, be cause, if you will reflect a moment, when man discovered the use of the horse, he discovered a mechanism which he could turn to his service in the same way as we use steam and electricity today. The horse became a means of civilization, of exploration and intercommunication. So, the history of the horse as a use ful animal to man comes in as the third or fourth topic. Excerpt from The Horse: How to Breed and Rear Him I have taken it on myself to write the following work in the belief that such a book is really needed at the present time. Perhaps I have also been persuaded to the task by the kind reception accorded to my former volumes. I had something to say of a practical kind, such as only a breeder and trainer of many years' experience could say and I have done my best to put the results of that experience into these pages. My treatise on the horse, therefore, should contain much in the way of advice that may - and will, I hope - prove of value and assistance to others. There cannot be many such books recently published, for I do not know of one which is the work of a truly practical and experienced man. Buying A Horse written by William Dean Howells and has been published by DigiCat this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-15 with Fiction categories.

'Buying a Horse' is an essay sharing several anecdotes on buying horses by William Dean Howells. He begins by saying that if one has enough money, there seems no reason why one should not go and buy such a horse as he wants. A friend of his proceeded to do so: He was about removing from Charlesbridge, where he had lived many happy years without a horse, farther into the country, where there were charming drives and inconvenient distances, and where a horse would be very desirable, if not quite necessary. But as a horse seemed at first an extravagant if not sinful desire, he began by talking vaguely round, and rather hinting than declaring that he thought somewhat of buying. The professor to whom he first intimated his purpose flung himself from his horse's back to the grassy border of the sidewalk where my friend stood, and said he would give him a few points. "In the first place don't buy a horse that shows much daylight under him, unless you buy a horse-doctor with him; get a short-legged horse; and he ought to be short and thick in the barrel,"—or words to that effect. "Don't get a horse with a narrow forehead: there are horse-fools as well as the other kind, and you want a horse with room for brains. And look out that he's all right forward."

Excerpt from The Horse Hay and grain have always been so abundant in America that every farmer could afford to keep at least one horse, however small his holding. The business of all except the older great cities is still largely carried on by men who were reared on the farm and who love the horse. This fact, coupled with cheap maintenance and abundant traffic, has-filled the cities as well as the country districts with horses. Unfortunately, until the twelfth Census was taken, we have had no means of knowing the exact number. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Examination Of The Urine Of The Horse And Man Classic Reprint written by Pierre A. Fish and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-04 with Science categories.

Excerpt from The Examination of the Urine of the Horse and Man This manual represents the published form of mimeographed sheets, which the writer has used, for some years past, in giving instruction to his veterinary students. Data relating to the urine of the horse is not abundant and, unfortunately, some of the tests which may be standard for human urine are not reliable for that of the horse and, therefore, require modification. In order to emphasize this fact, the writer has employed the comparative method and asks the students to examine their own urine along with that of the horse and note carefully the differences in the results. The importance of urine examination for diagnosis and prognosis in human medicine is too well known to require emphasis here; but, notwithstanding certain difficulties in the way of its application in veterinary medicine, the writer believes that there is no important reason why just as much valuable information may not be derived, in certain cases, from the urine of the horse by an up-to-date veterinarian, as the physician obtains from the urine of his patients. Simplification of methods, without too great a sacrifice in accuracy, is essential for satisfactory examination, - especially by veterinarians. The writer realizes that only a short step has been taken in this direction, but hopes that time will lighten the difficulties. P. A. F. October, 1906. Preface To The Second Edition In the present edition some changes have been made in the text and new material added with the hope of bringing the manual more completely up to date. There is still much to be done in investigating and simplifying the tests applicable to the urine of the domesticated animals and it is to be hoped that more research may be developed along this line. P. A. F. November, 1911. Preface For The Third Edition Experience has shown the desirability of making certain changes and some additions to the previous edition in order to bring this work up to date. Excerpt from The Complete Horseman I think it will be generally admitted that there is no means of travelling out of which more pleasure can be got than with horses, either in saddle or in harness. Only in one respect is a motor - car superior - that of speed. And this is a matter of very small importance unless a man has to cover a certain distance in a very limited time. When this is the case pleasure does not enter into the argument. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
