Humorous personal essays detailing a teenaged boy’s coming of age in the 1970s, an era defined by sexual liberation and drug experimentation. Clayton Matthews, if that’s his real name, was a child of the ‘70s. He smoked pot, drove fast cars, and chased women. In this hilarious collection of essays detailing his misspent youth, Matthews looks back at a decade where bell bottoms, free love and LSD were all the rage. A self-proclaimed hippie from a small Midwestern town, Matthews’s no-holds-barred account of everything from sexual exploits to acid trips will have readers young and old relishing a time when the counterculture of the ‘60s had become the mainstream of the 70s, and sex, drugs and rock and roll were a way of life.

Why can it be so difficult to be around someone with a serious illness? Something lurks deep within us, urging us to avoid someone seriously ill. A Sick Prejudice explores our innermost fears, primal emotions, and biases when we get into illness situations. It reveals the flawed reasoning and escape tactics that naturally arise in us. Joseph McNolty weaves together research with heartfelt stories that span over 15 years of his wife’s cancer and his own. He uncovers why there is a “sick prejudice,” how it affects us, and how it can make an illness worse. McNolty offers us easy ways to overcome the distressed and exaggerated feelings we can have. We then can create a healing environment for the sick one and an enriching experience for ourselves. More than just a look at the stereo-types and aversions people can have to illness, A Sick Prejudice explores the essential role of sickness in our lives and the personal growth that can come from the experience.

This book fosters a scientific debate for sophisticated approaches and cognitive technologies (such as deep learning, machine learning and advanced analytics) for enhanced healthcare services in light of the tremendous scope in the future of intelligent systems for healthcare. The authors discuss the proliferation of huge data sources (e.g. genomes, electronic health records (EHRs), mobile diagnostics, and wearable devices) and breakthroughs in artificial intelligence applications, which have unlocked the doors for diagnosing and treating multitudes of rare diseases. The contributors show how the widespread adoption of intelligent health based systems could help overcome challenges, such as shortages of staff and supplies, accessibility barriers, lack of awareness on certain health issues, identification of patient needs, and early detection and diagnosis of illnesses. This book is a small yet significant step towards exploring recent advances, disseminating state-of-the-art techniques and deploying novel technologies in intelligent healthcare services and applications. Describes the advances of computing methodologies for life and medical science data; Presents applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare along with case studies and datasets; Provides an ideal reference for medical imaging researchers, industry scientists and engineers, advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and clinicians.

Brazilian authorities continuously fail to comply with international norms on minimal conditions of incarceration. Brazil's prison population has risen ten-fold since the country's return to democracy in the 1980s. Its prisons typically operate at double official capacity and with 100 prisoners for each guard on duty. At the same time, however, the average Brazilian prison is not as disorderly or its staff-inmate relations so conflictual as our established theories on prison life might predict. This monograph explores the means by which Brazilian prisons function in the absence of guards. More specifically, the means by which prison security and inmate discipline is negotiated between prison managers, gangs and the wider inmate body. While fragile and varied, this historical tradition of co-produced governance has for decades kept most prisons in better order and enabled most prisoners to better survive.
