Excerpt from The New Onion Culture: A Complete Guide in Growing Onions for Profit My own earlier interest in onion growing was revived by the introduction, in 1889, of the Prizetaker onion, a variety of that large and very mild Spanish type which we now import in still considerable quan tities from abroad. The bulbs, in my (then) New Jersey sandy loam grew so beautiful and perfect, and of such large Size (although grown by the old method, from seed sown in open ground in spring), that I became really enthusiastic about the possibilities hidden in the crop. In my further experiments with this novelty, I stumbled In 1890, upon the method now generally known as the new onion culture. Excerpt from Structure of the Intraseasonal Pricing Mechanism for Late Summer Onions, 1930-68 Production of dry onions in the United States is characterized by seasonal crops possessing distinct characteristics and produced in different regions.2 The early spring crop, the first of the calendar year, is produced entirely in the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas and consists of the mild Bermuda varieties. The late spring and early summer crops follow. These are grown primarily in the Western and Southwestern States and include light-skinned varieties such as sweet Spanish and white globe. The largest seasonal crop, about 70 percent of total crop-year production, is the late summer crop. It consists mainly of yellow globe varieties grown in the Lake States and several Western States. While the early spring, late spring, and early summer crops are, in general, marketed immediately following harvest, the late summer crop is largely a storage crop. Late summer onions placed in storage during the august-october harvest period are shipped out during the winter until the early spring crop is ready for harvest. Late summer onions remaining in storage when the new crop reaches market volume are of limited value since they compete poorly on a quality basis. But, since the date of harvest for the new crop can vary as much as 6 to 8 weeks from year to year, the late summer storage market is faced with the problem of distributing stocks over a variable-length shipping season. Another problem facing the marketing system is obtaining accurate knowledge of the magnitude of stocks in storage. During harvest, a portion of harvested production moves into marketing channels, while the remainder is placed in storage. Following harvest, when all sales are from storage, there is accurate public information on total harvested production, but not on the relative quantities sold and held. Consequently, the total quantity to be shipped as well as the length of the shipping season are uncertain at the outset of the sales-from-storage season. "This will be an important book, and a powerful exemplar for the growing numbers of anthropologists who seek to place such things as democracy, citizenship, and neoliberalism under an ethnographic lens."—James Ferguson, author of Expectations of Modernity: Myths and Meanings of Urban Life on the Zambin Copperbelt "In joining activism and fine ethnography, Paley enables us to appreciate the profound complexity of the links between civil society and public institutions. Chakrabarty's assessment of "the undemocratic foundations of 'democracy'" becomes a fine analytic tool as it is refracted in the words of the women of Población La Bandera."—Charles Briggs, author of Learning How to Ask "Paley has produced an insightful and fascinating exploration of the shifting meanings of democracy for the Chilean state and for shantytown activists across the Pinochet dictatorship and through the contradictory democratic politics of the 1990s. The marketing of democracy is a highly relevant issue for societies and states throughout the world."—Kay Warren, author of Indigenous Movements and Their Critics: Pan-Maya Activism in Guatemala "An important challenge to Polyanna conventional wisdoms about democratic transitions and neo-liberal miracles in Chile and its neighbors."—Peter Winn, author of Weavers of Revolution "This is anthropology as the observation of and involvement in, the new, participatory politics of the previously excluded."—Sally Falk Moore, author of Law as Process

Musings And Meditations written by Robert Silverberg and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-29 with Fiction categories.

Presenting acclaimed essays from one of contemporary science fiction's most imaginative wordsmiths, this collection shows that Robert Silverberg's nonfiction is as witty and original as his fiction and full of acute observations and matter-of-fact insights. Whether he is discussing science fiction, history, cultural effects, science, or writing, Silverberg is always exploring new territories. As in his fiction, no cultural icon escapes his scrutiny, including fellow writers such as Robert Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, H. P. Lovecraft, and Isaac Asimov. Delightfully wicked commentaries on the concepts of thoughtcrimes, space exploration, the ancient Antikythera Computer, and the universal translator in science fiction fill these essays, many of which were originally published as columns in Asimov Science Fiction magazine.
