This series rises out of my personal journey with the Runes that began during a Mask Dance workshop in Northern Germany, the birthplace of the runes. During the week I spent in a lovely seminar house secluded in among the trees bordering the heather of the Lunebergerheide, I found myself tasked with telling the story of the Runes as one of creation, not destruction. We used shamanic drumming and rattling to drive the visionary state and a specific body posture to guide our experience. My time was spent deep in a philosophical discussion with the energetic field of the Runes. It was impressed on me that the two fundamental distortions in the historical practice of Runes were the suppression of sexual energy in Christianity and the Germanic tribe's practice of ritual killing to gain personal power. I was shown how this combination inherently leads to atrocities. My first step was to seek out any creation stories I could find that were related to the runes. Somewhat to my surprise, I did not find any direct or obvious correlations between the runes names and the stories. In fact, the use of the runes as an alphabet turned out to be driven by the Christian Church. Then I looked into the current practice of Rune Stances and found their origins were both recent and suspect. Along the way, I had to admit that if the creation story of the runes was readily accessible, they would not have had to grab hold of an ignorant mixed-blood New Mexican to tell their tale. What I had to offer was my own idiosyncratic view of the situation. Since I had experience with ecstatic trance postures, I wondered if rune shapes corresponded with ancient ecstatic body postures. Once I turned towards the much older and more mysterious visionary roots of the Runes, my path to a runic story of creation began to open. I ended up with a mosaic of a sacred World Tree made of ancient bits and pieces. I hope they can open creative experiential doors for those drawn to work in the runic realms. "Every day I search in my memory for a Scripture that will help me get through the day. I feel as though I'm at the bottom of a well, screaming 'Help!' to the top." Following the death of her father, the adoption of a child with emotional and behavioral challenges, and the start of her own physical deterioration, depression had a paralyzing grip on Nancie Carmichael. The wife and business partner of a busy publisher, mother of five children, and a leader in her church, Nancie had gone from being a healthy, confident woman to becoming physically and emotionally ill. But in the midst of this emptiness, she heard the gentle voice of the Father whisper, Just let go. By learning to hear His voice -- and through stress management, counseling, and healthier living -- Nancie emerged from the desperation with invaluable wisdom that she shares here. Sometimes the things that make our lives full are what threaten to crush us. In Praying for Rain, readers will learn to take an honest look at personal losses, incorporate the principles of balance into their lives, and hear His voice in the wilderness.

Before The Rain written by Luisita López Torregrosa and has been published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-07 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

“Takes us to the exotic and pillaged places of the earth . . . and into the hearts of two passionate, revolutionary women who dared to love and lose.” —Carole DeSanti, author of The Unruly Passions of Eugénie R In a voice haunting and filled with longing, Before the Rain tells the story of love unexpected, its fragile bounds and subtle perils. As a newspaper editor in the ’80s, Luisita Torregrosa lived her career. Enter Elizabeth, a striking, reserved, and elusive writer with whom Torregrosa falls deeply in love. Their story—irresistible romance, overlapping ambitions, and fragile union—unfolds as the narrative shifts to the Philippines and the fall of Ferdinand Marcos. There, on that beautiful, troubled island, the couple creates a world of their own, while covering political chaos and bloody upheavals. What was effortless abroad becomes less idyllic when they return to the United States, and their ending becomes as surprising and revealing as their beginning. Torregrosa captures the way love transforms those who experience it for an unforgettable, but often too brief, time. This book is distinguished not only by its strong, unique, and conflicted heroines, but also by Torregrosa’s lyrical portrait of the Philippines and the even more exotic heart of intimacy. “Spare, precise and soulful, Before the Rain is an epic travelogue of the heart. It has the urgency of a front page news story, but then, no matter what is happening in the world, love is always revolutionary when it happens to you.” —Bob Morris, author of Assisted Loving “As Torregrosa fashions in her oblique and beautiful fashion, the two women could never really acknowledge their love publicly, underscoring a sad truth to this memorable work.” —Publishers Weekly

The Encyclopedia of American Poetry: The Twentieth Century contains over 400 entries that treat a broad range of individual poets and poems, along with many articles devoted to topics, schools, or periods of American verse in the century. Entries fall into three main categories: poet entries, which provide biographical and cultural contexts for the author's career; entries on individual works, which offer closer explication of the most resonant poems in the 20th-century canon; and topical entries, which offer analyses of a given period of literary production, school, thematically constructed category, or other verse tradition that historically has been in dialogue with the poetry of the United States.
