Taking the conditions which govern actual work on the farm into consideration, nothing specific has yet been published for the practical farmer, and it is for him this book has been written. It is elementary because many have had no opportunity to study bookkeeping, therefore the man who knows nothing about it has been kept in sight from cover to cover. The illustration given is introduced to show the application of the fundamental principles of accounting to the every-day routine of general farming. No special sets for stock, dairy or fruit farms is thought necessary because the principles of accounts are unchangeable and only vary in their application. All the farmer, dairyman, fruit-grower or stockman really needs to fully understand the principles when no trouble will be experienced in arranging a system of accounts to suit his wants, which will vary ta certain extent on every farm and with each individual. Bookkeeping is simply a matter of record and to do it correctly only requires that the principles of debit and credit be understood. It is necessary on many farms and useful on all. We have examined numerous text books on the subject and many blank-books, arranged for the purpose of keeping farm accounts, but all of them seem more complicated than is necessary for the use of the great majority of everyday farmers. Our object in the preparation of this little book is to remove from the subject of farm accounts, as far as possible, every thing which might tend to confuse the practical farmer, and so simplify the whole matter that those who read this book will find pleasure in recording their farm operations. If we succeed in this, our work will not have been without results. Editor's Note. To Prof. Atkeson's outline is added, in part II., a description of a somewhat different, but very simple and practical method. I have endeavoured to furnish a system of accounts which the farmer will find simple enough to keep correctly, and which will at the same time give him the results of his farming operations in the various departments in which they lie. The substantial advantage to be gained by good bookkeeping is now widely known and acknowledged, but it is feared that very few farmers have hitherto availed themselves of it. Their employment renders them naturally disinclined for close attention to books, and it is not surprising that many of them regard book-keeping as troublesome and useless. It may be also that no clear statement has been presented to them of the application of bookkeeping to farm accounts. Some of the "Account Books" in use among them, although they afford the means of collecting under suggestive headings a variety of useful information, do not give a system of accounts the accuracy of which is capable of proof, and which will show to the farmer how he stands in respect of liabilities and assets.
