'Lifelong learning' is moving from buzzword to reality for ever latger numbers of workers. Firms increasingly need their workers to be active, self-directed learners who contribute to innovations and improvements of processes, products and services. Companies that explicitly encourage and support worker learning, from a strategic perspective, are called 'learning organisations'. This book is the result of an European study into the changing views and practices of professionals in the field of Human Resource Development within such organisations. Focusing on Europe, the book contains authors and research from Finland, the UK, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy. Theoretical explorations of the learning organisation and the changing face of HRD complement nearly thirty case studies of HRD functions. This book will be essential reading for both academics and professionals in the fields of HRD and lifelong learning.

The EUROTECNET program has been refocused to concentrate more on continuing vocational education as the area of greatest need across the European Community. Four priority fields or domains of innovative activity have been defined for the final 2 years of EUROTECNET. Priority domain 1 is innovative training needs analysis with a special focus on core competencies. A Europe-wide proposed classification categorizes technical, methodological, social, and behavioristic core competencies. Priority domain 2 is transfer of innovative methodologies for the planning and management of training in the framework of human resources development. The company as a learning organization is proposed, with changing roles of managers and workers and an increased role of the social partners in supporting the learning organization. Priority domain 3 is training providers as innovative service centers for enterprises. Requirements are systematic continuing training of employees in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and a new "training consultancy" approach between training institutions and SMEs. Priority domain 4 is innovative pedagogical methodologies and approaches. Trends in this area are as follows: learning situations closely related to work situations; independence and responsibility of individuals; involvement of all actors in training; and a continuous learning process. Training systems must include partnerships with industry, paradigmatic changes, and a lifelong learning continuum. (Appendices list EUROTECNET national strategic conferences and 49 publications.) Facing Up To The Learning Organization Challenge Key Issues From A European Perspective written by Barry Nyhan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Adult education categories.

This first volume of a two-volume publication provides an analytical overview of main questions emerging from recent European research and development projects related to the learning organization. Chapter 1 provides context for the European learning organization challenge and presents four main messages arising from the learning organization project. Chapter 2 proposes the European social model as providing a societal value framework that can give meaning to the learning organization concept from a European perspective. Chapters 3-4 identify main points emerging from the individual papers that formed the impetus for the learning organization project and attempt to discuss the issues raised against the background of an organizational learning interpretative framework. Chapter 3 argues that building learning organizations is not so much a process of applying a theory to practice, but rather a constructivist process of building a practice based on shared meaning arrived at through a collective deliberation and sense-making process. Chapter 4 stresses the need to focus on the organization in all its complexity as a holistic and organic working and learning system. Chapter 5 argues organizations can only be sustained in a form of cooperative-competition with other organizations and institutions representing different interest groups in society. Appendixes include 155 references and Volume II chapter summaries. (YLB).

The field of Human Resource Development (HRD) has grown in prominence as an independent discipline from its roots in both management and education since the 1980s. There has been continual debate about the boundaries of HRD ever since. Drawing on a wide and respected international contributor base and with a focus on international markets, this book provides a thematic overview of current knowledge in HRD across the globe. The text is separated into nine sections which explore the origins of the field, adjacent and related fields, theoretical approaches, policy perspectives, interventions, core issues and concerns, HRD as a profession, HRD around the world, and emerging topics and future trends. An epilogue rounds off the volume by considering the present and future states of the discipline, and suggesting areas for further research. The Routledge Companion to Human Resource Development is an essential resource for researchers, students and HRD professionals alike.
