Global issues such as climate change and the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis have spurred interest in thinking about the history of the modern economy that goes beyond disciplinary economic history. This book contributes to the cultural history of capitalism and its different regimes of productivity by pursuing the perspective of body history and by providing a global scope. Throughout modernity, the body served as a fundamental, albeit essentially changing, linchpin for both the organization of economic practices and for intellectual reflections on the economy. In particular, it was the pivotal interface to render notions of economic productivity intelligible. The book explores this central thesis in a range of case studies, drawing on source material from West Africa, Europe, Mexico, and the US. Framed by a theoretically informed introduction, which also provides a conceptual history of notions of productivity, and by an afterword that brings the approaches explored in this volume into dialogue with scholarship inspired by Marx and Foucault, the individual chapters tackle the concept of productivity from a wide array of angles, each illuminating the promises and problems of a cultural take on the history of economic productivity.

People often associate postwar Germany with technology and with its products of mass consumption, such as luxury cars. Even pop music, most notably Kraftwerk (literally 'power station') with songs such as Autobahn, Radioactivity or We are the Robots, disseminates the stereotype of a close link between German culture and technology. Technology in Modern German History explores various forms of technology in 200 years of German history and explains how technology has been fundamental to the shaping of modern Germany. The book investigates the role technology played in transforming Germany's culture, society and politics during the 19th and 20th centuries. Key topics covered include the different stages of industrialization, the growth of networked cities, and the triumph of a teleological narrative of technology as progress. Die Industriefotografie, wie man sie kennt, präsentiert Maschinen und gewaltige Anlagen der Großindustrie, den arbeitenden Menschen aber meist nur in Gruppen oder für einen Größenvergleich der beeindruckenden Produktionsmaschinerie. Der Alltag industrieller Auftragsfotografie in mittelständischen produzierenden Unternehmen sah anders aus. Am Beispiel hannoverscher Konsumgüterfirmen zeigt die Autorin, welche Bedeutung die Fotos der Beschäftigten – ungelernte Arbeiterinnen und selbstbewusste Fachkräfte – für das Selbstverständnis der Unternehmen und für ihre Außendarstellung hatten, wie sich die Bildkonzepte unterschieden und im Lauf der Jahrzehnte veränderten. Die Mitarbeiter/-innen waren dabei keine Randfiguren. Informationen zum Arbeitsvorgang und zum historischen Kontext aus Archivrecherche, Werkszeitungen und Zeitzeugeninterviews begleiten die Aufnahmen. Die Arbeit füllt mit dem Blick auf die Auftragsfotografie mittelständischer Konsumgüterfabrikanten eine Leerstelle in der Literatur zur Industriefotografie. Kristina Huttenlocher, geb. Blunck, aufgewachsen in Hannover, studierte in Berlin und Frankfurt Politikwissenschaft, Geschichte, Germanistik und Wirtschaftswissenschaften. Sie arbeitete als Lehrerin und Schulleiterin, forschte zur Geschichte hannoverscher Nahrungsmittelunternehmen und veröffentlichte die Firmengeschichten von Feinkost-Appel (2013) und der Schokoladenfabrik B. Sprengel & Co (2016).

Der Sammelband geht auf die im März 2017 im Deutschen Bergbau-Museum Bochum veranstaltete Tagung „Der Steinkohlenbergbau in Boom und Krise nach 1945. Das Ruhrgebiet als Vergleichsfolie für Transformationsprozesse in der Schwerindustrie“ zurück. Vor dem Hintergrund einer Inkongruenz der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung auf regionaler und nationaler Ebene sowie der spezifischen Rolle des Ruhrgebiets stellte sich die Frage nach der Eignung des die Region dominierenden Ruhrbergbaus als Vergleichsfolie für transformative Prozesse in der Schwerindustrie. Die Beiträge untersuchen verschiedene Aspekte der Entwicklung des Ruhrbergbaus oder vergleichbarer Branchen aus technik-, sozial-, wissens-, wirtschafts-, unternehmens- und politikhistorischer Perspektive. Damit leistet der Band einen Beitrag zur Kontextualisierung der Entwicklung der Montanindustrie des Ruhrgebiets in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und zeigt Vergleichsperspektiven z.B. in Bezug auf die Besonderheiten der Krisenbewältigung durch politisch bedeutende Branchen oder die Stellung von Gewerkschaften auf. Zugleich wird deutlich gemacht, dass es für eine vergleichende Einordnung der im Ruhrgebiet beobachteten Entwicklungen an weiteren detaillierten Studien fehlt.
