Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Excerpt from The Problem of Human Destiny: Or the End of Providence in the World and Man I am sensible that I em putting forth this work at a time when the public mind is absorbed with questions, not of philosophy, but of awful fact; when we are pressed to solve, not the problem of the world, but the problem of our own national stability and honor. But although the first shock of the crisis seemed almost to unseat all our theories and thoughts of life, yet as the struggle has gone on, I eon fess that it has driven me, more and more, to the great prin ciples and resorts of my faith in Providence and Humanity; and it has seemed to me, therefore, that the discussions proposed have some pertinence to the time. Excerpt from The Population Problem: A Study in Human Evolution I wish to express my very great obligations to Professor L. T. Hobhouse, who read through the whole book in manuscript and furnished me with numerous most valuable suggestions and criticisms. To Mr. Julian Huxley, who read the chapters which deal most directly with biological problems, I am also indebted for valuable help. The calculations which appear in the last section of the fifth chapter I owe to Mr. H. T. Tizard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Humanity in the City If in any way they seem to imply a neglect of that interior and holy life which is the spring not only of right affections, but of clear per ception and sturdy, every-day duty. I hope, on the contrary, that the very aspects of this busy city life - the very problems which start out of it - will tend to convince men of the necessity of this inward and regenerating principle. Nevertheless, I maintain that these topics have a place in the circle of the preach er's work, and he need entertain no fear of desecrating his pulpit by secular themes, who seeks to consecrate all things in any way involving the action and the welfare of men, by the Spirit and aims of His Religion who, while he preached the Gospel, likewise fed the hungry, healed the sick, and touched the issues of every temporal want. I may have failed in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Biological Aspects of Human Problems This volume is based on notes begun during a trip to Egypt in 1906, when it occurred to me that a discussion of certain human problems from the biological standpoint might prove helpful to my children. It had long seemed to me that the serious student of biological processes might in time reach views respecting the mystery of life, which should throw some light on the attitude of people toward nature and especially toward other human beings. Having reached a time of life when I began to feel confidence that the laws of biology might often prove reliable guides to the understanding of puzzling situations in life, I experienced a desire to state my views to my children in a manner more definite than is possible in conversation. I am now led to publish my interpretation of biological laws in their bearing on human life in the hope that they may prove of some service to persons who have faith that an under standing of such laws is frequently a help to more intelligent and humane conduct. Excerpt from The Problem of Human Life: As Viewed by the Great Thinkers From Plato to the Present Time IT is a genuine pleasure to me to see The Problem Of Human Life in an English Version, particularly as the translation has been prepared with great care by esteemed friends, and is, I think, entirely successful. The present book forms the essential complement of all my other works. It is designed to afford historical confirmation Of the View that conceptions are determined by life, not life by conceptions. Under the guidance of this conviction the book traverses the whole spiritual development Of the Western world, in the hope that the several phases of the development, and, above all, its great personalities, will be brought nearer to the personal experience Of the, reader than is customarily done. Particularly in an age Of predomin'ant' specialisation, when the pursuit of learning too Often endangers the completeness of living, such an endeavour is fully justified. I hope that the English-speaking public will give the book a sympathetic reception. With their own thinkers, the problem of life has always stood in the foreground, and scientific re search steadily regarded the whole life Of man. Thus my book presents nothing foreign to the genius of the English-speaking peoples: may it be felt and welcomed by them as something kindred to their own aims! Excerpt from Why We Behave Like Human Beings By complete I mean comprehensive. This is the most comprehensive account of human beings that I know of. It is as up-to-date as I can make it. It moves as fast as I can make it, and avoids blind alleys which lead nowhere. It does touch many problems not yet solved or only partially guessed at; its handling of such problems is as sound and sane as I can make it with the help of many friends. This does not commit them for my errors of omission and com mission, nor lessen my responsibility for statements of fact or inferences from facts and hypotheses - nor signify that they approve an anthropologist's use of their materials for his story.
