Humans are the only beings in the world who are concerned with what ought to be done. They perceive the impact of another human’s action as good or evil, moral or immoral. Healthcare is humans caring for other vulnerable humans and ethics evaluates the way humans treat each other, so follows logically that this book about ethical decision-making in healthcare uses humanity as its organizing structure. The book begins by considering values and good reasoning. Philosophy is concerned with what can be known through the power of human reason, so we need to consider what it is to know, to grasp concepts and to use good reasoning to make arguments. It then discusses what it is to be a being in the world, looking at both nature and human nature, and considers the professional and the patient. The volume then explores making good ethical choices and the use of theoretical ethics to evaluate what the good choice is. It also details issues at the beginning and end of life and concerns related to healthcare as a business. It will allow the reader to make decisions in moral situations through the application of principles of philosophical ethics, to understand the foundations of the philosophical principles they find compatible with their personal informal moral development, and to resolve ethical dilemmas into their essential components using a provided framework to make clear the conflicting values, policies, or principles to move to a principle-based solution.

This text provides an understanding of values and how values impact the way we see the world. It also considers questions of reasoning and how principles guide practice. This volume is a compilation of key papers presented at the global conference titled â oeIn Defence of the Family: Family, Children and Culture, â held in Bangkok in June 2011. The event marked the 25th anniversary of the Service and Research Institute on Family and Children (SERFAC), headquartered in Chennai, India. SERFAC was established by Dr Catherine Bernard, MBBS, MS, and collaborators from diverse backgrounds from India and around the world, committed to ensuring the well-being of families so as to address the contemporary moral, spiritual, institutional and technological crises affecting families, children, communities, nations and global society. An internationally registered non-governmental organization, SERFAC, which enjoys Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC (the Economic and Social Council) of the UN, works towards creating awareness and sensitizing society to the fact that a healthy family life and its allied institution of marriage constitute the most important resource base and natural environment for the well-being of its members, particularly children. Families and children across the world face a multitude of ever-changing challenges in an increasingly internationalized culture due to globalization. It is vital for society to respect the autonomy, integrity, solemnity and sacredness of every unborn child, of every person, individual and family, and for every nation to work towards a meeting at different levels. A dialogue must occur to enrich and celebrate this diversity of family, children and cultures, in order to make the world a more humane and civilized place in which to live. In this way, we can ensure a promising future for humanity. The Service and Research Institute on Family and Children has made a start in this reversal process by identifying and working with the smallest, yet, at the same time, the most potent social unit â " the Family.

A Wall Street Journal Bestseller Named a Financial Times top title How to unleash "human magic" and achieve improbable results. Hubert Joly, former CEO of Best Buy and orchestrator of the retailer's spectacular turnaround, unveils his personal playbook for achieving extraordinary outcomes by putting people and purpose at the heart of business. Back in 2012, "Everyone thought we were going to die," says Joly. Eight years later, Best Buy was transformed as Joly and his team rebuilt the company into one of the nation's favorite employers, vastly increased customer satisfaction, and dramatically grew Best Buy's stock price. Joly and his team also succeeded in making Best Buy a leader in sustainability and innovation. In The Heart of Business, Joly shares the philosophy behind the resurgence of Best Buy: pursue a noble purpose, put people at the center of the business, create an environment where every employee can blossom, and treat profit as an outcome, not the goal. This approach is easy to understand, but putting it into practice is not so easy. It requires radically rethinking how we view work, how we define companies, how we motivate, and how we lead. In this book Joly shares memorable stories, lessons, and practical advice, all drawn from his own personal transformation from a hard-charging McKinsey consultant to a leader who believes in human magic. The Heart of Business is a timely guide for leaders ready to abandon old paradigms and lead with purpose and humanity. It shows how we can reinvent capitalism so that it contributes to a sustainable future.
