Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2021 im Fachbereich Afrikawissenschaften - Sonstiges, Note: 2,0, Universität Leipzig, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Gegenstand dieser Hausarbeit sind Hungerkrisen. Dabei stehen die komplexen und vielschichtigen Ursachen und Folgen im Niger im Vordergrund. Meist lassen sich Hungerkrisen auf das Versagen nationaler und internationaler Akteure zurückführen. Niger ist ein Land, welches mittlerweile fast alle zwei Jahre von Hungersnöten heimgesucht wird. Die Lage ist prekär und die Folgen für die Bevölkerung und die Gesellschaft schwerwiegend. In der Arbeit wird dargestellt, wie trotz einer globalisierten Welt und ausreichend Ressourcen und modernen Technologien, Hunger und Hungerkrisen im Niger bestehen und wie sie das Leben der Menschen beeinflussen. Während meiner Aufenthalte auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent habe ich die Anfänge von Hunger sehen können – Kinder, die lange Wege auf sich nehmen, um eine Mahlzeit am Tag in einer Suppenküche zu bekommen, die aber so klein ist, dass sie den Hunger nicht stillt. Ich habe Essenspakete gepackt, um sie den Menschen zu bringen, denen es an allen Grundnahrungsmitteln fehlt, denen es an Zukunftschancen fehlt und die jeden Tag mit dem Hunger zu kämpfen haben. Zunächst werden in Kapitel 2 die grundlegenden Begrifflichkeiten näher erläutert. In Kapitel 3 werden Theorien und Erklärungsansätze für Ursachen von Hungerkrisen dargestellt und in Kapitel 4 die Lage in Niger geschildert. In Kapitel 5 werden die Folgen der Gesellschaft im Niger aufgrund des Hungers verdeutlicht. Abschließend werden die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und Ergebnisse in einem Fazit zusammengefasst.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: A-, , course: Political Science, language: English, abstract: In January 2006, insurgents in Nigeria’s Niger-Delta kidnapped four foreign oil workers working for Shell Petroleum. Since then, over 250 foreign oil workers have been kidnapped in the region. A proliferation of insurgent groups, led by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta (MEND) and the Niger-Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF), have continued to claim responsibility. These groups frame their act as woven within the fabric of politics to protest the exploitation of the region by multinational oil corporations (MNOCs) and the Nigerian government. Mainstream literature on the region has largely focused on the nature of violence while a few of the literature on kidnapping are descriptive and have not properly situated the act within the realm of domestic and international politics. I develop a conceptual framework for understanding kidnapping as a political act in the Niger-Delta drawing on empirical evidence. I operationalize this framework by focusing on a triad of actors: insurgents, MNOCs, and the Nigerian government. Findings show that kidnapping in the region is intractable because, in a bid to nip the act in the bud, the Nigerian government has focused on symptoms rather than the causes of the act. More so, insurgents have become a useful tool to unleash mayhem on opposition parties during elections. Kidnapping in the region will only become history if fundamental economic, social, and political questions are addressed by the Nigerian government and MNOCs.

With one more year before the 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the 2014 Global Hunger Index report offers a multifaceted overview of global hunger that brings new insights to the global debate on where to focus efforts in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. The state of hunger in developing countries as a group has improved since 1990, falling by 39 percent, according to the 2014 GHI. Despite progress made, the level of hunger in the world is still serious, with 805 million people continuing to go hungry, according to estimates by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The global average obscures dramatic differences across regions and countries. Regionally, the highest GHI scoresand therefore the highest hunger levelsare in Africa south of the Sahara and South Asia, which have also experienced the greatest absolute improvements since 2005. South Asia saw the steepest absolute decline in GHI scores since 1990. Progress in addressing child underweight was the main factor behind the improved GHI score for the region since 1990.

In the spring of 1945, Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler, President Edvard Benes, and Marshal Josip Broz Tito stood as examples of the complete rupture between the Germans and Austrians on the one hand, and the Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, and Bosniaks on the other. The total break that occurred in World War II with war crimes, crimes against humanity, and even genocides (particularly against the Jews and "Gypsies") had a long pre-history, beginning with violent nationalist clashes in the Habsburg Monarchy during the revolutions of 1848/49. Therefore, this monograph - based on a broad range of international primary and secondary sources - explores the development of the political, legal, economic, social, and cultural "communities of conflict" within Austria-Hungary, especially in the Bohemian and South Slavic countries, the making of the Paris Peace Treaties in 1919/20 by violating President Wilson's principle of self-determination, particularly in drawing new borders and creating new economic units, and the perpetuated ethnic-national conflicts between Czechs and Germans, Slovaks and Magyars, Slovenes and Germans, Croats and Serbs as well as Serbs and Germans in the successor states, deepening the differences between the nations of East-Central Europe.
