As we have come to accept the duality of physical and virtual learning spaces as a permanent feature of our educational landscape, we begin to question its validity. Is this really a dichotomy, or is it a continuum? Should this be the primary dimension around which we cluster educational experiences - how does it intersect and interact with other axes, such as formal-informal, vocational-recreational, open-closed, teacher-student? How do we adapt, as teachers, learners, designers, policy makers, to this changing landscape? How do we shape it to offer an optimal learning experience? Such questions led us to conduct a series of academic and professional events on the theme of Hybrid Learning Spaces (HLS) - spaces which challenge and defy the dichotomies above. This edited book collates some of the products of that endeavor, offering a multi-vocal, interdisciplinary approach to hybridity in education. It connects practical examples, design directives and theoretical analysis, combining perspectives from technology research and development, educational theory and practice, architecture and space and product design. This book addresses researchers, practitioners, innovators and policy makers in education, technology and design, offering broad perspectives and then distilling practical insights in the form of design principles and patterns, pedagogical models, and predictions of future trends.

This collection of insightful essays gives teachers’ perspectives on the role of space and presence in teaching performance. It explores how the demand for remote teaching can be met while at the same time successfully educating and working compassionately in this most ‘live’ of disciplines. Teaching Performance Practices in Remote and Hybrid Spaces reframes prevailing ideas about pedagogy in dance, theatre, and somatics and applies them to teaching in face-to-face, hybrid, and remote situations. Case studies from instructors and professors provide essential, practical suggestions for remotely teaching a vast range of studio courses, including tap dance, theatre design, movement, script analysis, and acting, rendering this book an invaluable resource. The challenges that teachers are facing in the early twenty-first century are addressed throughout, helping readers to navigate these unprecedented circumstances whilst delivering lessons, guiding workshops, rehearsing, or even staging performances. This book is invaluable for dance and theatre teachers or leaders who work in the performing arts and related disciplines. It is also ideal for any professionals who need research-based solutions for teaching performance online.

Game Science in Hybrid Learning Spaces explores the potential, implications, and impact of game-based approaches and interventions in response to the blurring of boundaries between digital and physical as well as formal and informal learning spaces and contexts. The book delves into the concept, opportunities, and challenges of hybrid learning, which aims to reduce the barriers of time and physical space in teaching and learning practices, fostering seamless, sustained, and measurable learning experience and outcomes beyond the barriers of formal education and physical learning contexts. Based on original research, Game Science in Hybrid Learning Spaces establishes trans-disciplinary and holistic considerations for further conceptual and empirical investigation into this topic, with the dual goals of a better understanding of the role of game-based approaches in a blended environment and of the possible structural and cultural transformation of formal education and lifelong learning. This book is an essential guide for researchers, designers, teachers, learners, and practitioners who want to better understand the relationship between games and learning that merges digital and physical experiences and blends formal and informal instructions.

Architects, designers, and engineers have been using computers for decades to increase productivity, to solve seemingly insoluble problems, and for sophisticated presentations. Frank Gehry is particularly recognized for his innovative use of the computer. It is only recently, however, that computers are being used not just as tools, but as creative devices capable of generating startling new design ideas and entirely unexpected forms for the built world. For the first time in decades, a generation of technocratic architects and designers are producing buildings and structures that are redefining the practice and understanding of architecture. By breeding ideas with form, the real with the virtual, they create hybrid spaces that challenge long-held conventions of space, architecture, and time. This innovative publication presents the work of twelve leading international practitioners of architecture who are spearheading the creative wave. The explosive growth in the field has been fueled by a variety of new softwares and computer-programming techniques. Whether derived from digital animation or complex algorithms, the results of these methods are sending shockwaves around the architecture world. From Greg Lynn's animate forms to UN Studio's diagrammatics, from dECOi's multidisciplinary researches to NOX's crossbreeding of biology and technology, little of this work has been seen in any but the most exclusive design circles. The author introduces the various approaches that lie behind "Hybrid Space," while placing the new work within the context of contemporary developments in architecture and technology. The book's core features extensive profiles of the architects, which detailtheir philosophies and design processes, and present several of their most recent projects. A substantial reference section includes comprehensive information on each architect and a glossary of technical terms. At a time when architects around the world search for new forms of creative expression, this timely publication considers the exceptional work of architects for whom technology" is" expression, not just a means to an end.

The contributions to this volume reflect the growing exchange between the humanities and the social sciences regarding issues of space and hybridity. While the theorization of the humanities has resulted in the textualization of the world, it is now time to pay more attention to the political, social, and historical aspects texts. The topics discussed in this volume include theories of space and politics, global transformations in the realms of culture, society, and economy, and the changing landscapes of literature, the mass media, and popular culture.

This book presents a mobile technology capacity building framework that offers academics, students, and practitioners involved in workplace education a deeper understanding of, and practical guidance on, how mobile technology can enhance professional learning. Approaching professional and workplace learning as a hybrid space in which work, learning and technology meet, the book discusses the value of mobile technology in shaping professional education, particularly during student placements. The framework focuses on staying professional and safe, considering issues of time and place, planning learning activities, initiating dialogue, networking, creating learning opportunities on-the-go, and deepening reflection. It is designed to assist students and their educators to use mobile technology knowledgeably and responsibly, and to help bridge the gap between university learning and workplace practice. This book also contributes to a better understanding of the interconnectedness between learning, practice and technology. It demonstrates how to enhance learning and working with mobile technology by drawing on two perspectives: the ‘professional-plus’ and the ‘deliberate professional’.

This book explores hybrid play as a site of interdisciplinary activity—one that is capable of generating new forms of mobility, communication, subjects, and artistic expression as well as new ways of interacting with and understanding the world. The chapters in this collection explore hybrid making, hybrid subjects, and hybrid spaces, generating interesting conversations about the past, current and future nature of hybrid play. Together, the authors offer important insights into how place and space are co-constructed through play; how, when, and for what reasons people occupy hybrid spaces; and how cultural practices shape elements of play and vice versa. A diverse group of scholars and practitioners provides a rich interdisciplinary perspective, which will be of great interest to those working in the areas of games studies, media studies, communication, gender studies, and media arts.

Mobility And Locative Media written by Adriana de Souza e Silva and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-07 with Social Science categories.

Mobilities has become an important framework to understand and analyze contemporary social, spatial, economic and political practices. Especially as mobile media become seamlessly integrated into transportation networks, navigating urban spaces, and connecting with social networks while on the move, researchers need new approaches and methods to bring together mobilities with mobile communication and locative media. Mobile communication scholars have focused on cell phones, often ignoring broader connections to urban spaces, geography, and locational media. As a result, they emphasized virtual mobility and personalized communication as a way of disconnecting from place, location and publics. The growing pervasiveness of location-aware technology urges us to rethink the intersection among location, mobile technologies and mobility. Few studies have addressed the many transformations taking place in mobile sociality and in urban spatial processes through the appropriation of these technologies.
