Il volume illustra l'attività editoriale di Giovanni Scheiwiller (1889-1965) e del figlio Vanni (1934-1999) attraverso il ricco materiale documentario dell'archivio Scheiwiller acquisito dal Centro Apice (Università degli Studi di Milano) nel 2005. Il padre Giovanni fondò la propria casa editrice "all'Insegna del Pesce d'Oro", la cui produzione inizialmente fu dedicata a libri d'arte di piccolo formato, dalla veste raffinata e a tiratura limitata, destinata a bibliofili e cultori di discipline artistiche. Nel 1951 Vanni Scheiwiller subentrò al padre nella conduzione dell'attività di editore d'arte ampliando la propria presenza editoriale con opere di poesia e di letteratura e pubblicando, tra il 1951 e il 1999, quasi tremila titoli. Tra le carte del fondo Scheiwiller si trovano rappresentati, attraverso corrispondenza, fotografie, materiale iconografico, bozze, manoscritti e dattiloscritti originali, alcuni dei maggiori scrittori, artisti ed editori italiani e stranieri del Novecento, da de Chirico, Depero, Manzù, Matisse a Montale, Papini, Parise, Vittorini, Verga, Beckett, Cocteau, Pound. Il volume si apre con una cronologia illustrata e con una serie di immagini a tutta pagina commentate da brevi, significative citazioni firmate. Seguono 11 saggi, ciascuno dedicato a un particolare aspetto delle varie edizioni o al rapporto con un artista: Severini, Modigliani, Piero Manzoni e altri.

Borrowed from optics, the concept of parallax identifies the apparently relative position of objects according to the lines of sight determined by the viewer’s standpoint. This concept proves particularly useful in opening new insights into the work of two major authors of Modernist literature: although coincidentally born and deceased in the same years (1882–1941), James Joyce and Virginia Woolf are seldom the object of a joint outlook. Such a watertight separation is witnessed by the scarcity of scholarly work concerned with the relationship between two authors who, on the other hand, often feature together in studies and anthologies on Modernism. Parallaxes fills this void by tackling the many implications of Woolf and Joyce’s difficult—if not failed—encounter, and provides new perspectives on the connections between their respective work. The essays in the volume investigate the works of the two writers—seven decades after their death—from a variety of angles, both singularly and jointly, stimulating dialogue between scholars in both Woolf and Joyce studies.

Quali sono stati i modi in cui la poesia del secondo Novecento si è propagata e diffusa? I circuiti e le traiettorie del testo poetico sono assai meno lineari di quanto possa apparire. Morfologia a diffusione ristretta, ma di massimo prestigio culturale nel campo letterario novecentesco, la poesia è altresì un genere ad alto tasso di plasticità fruitiva e editoriale: i versi sono letti e scambiati in rivista, in plaquette, in una gamma di edizioni ispirate a criteri filologici e editoriali mutevoli. Non è un fatto di poco conto: se socializzata in modi difformi, l’opera non solo muta fisionomia, ma intercetta dissimili bisogni estetici e culturali. Il libro offre una campionatura di questi processi, affiancando casi di studio e differenti approcci metodologici, che chiamano in causa le pratiche della trasmissione delle opere, della storia della letteratura, della teoria dei generi letterari e della traduzione, della sociologia della cultura. Le attività di manipolazione dei prodotti poetici compongono un prisma sorprendentemente sfaccettato e dalle ricadute molto ampie, a dispetto di un ambito di scrittura e lettura che pure si presenta numericamente circoscritto. Questo stato dell’arte sollecita una metodologia duplice: all’indagine di singole vicende di circolazione della poesia, sogguardate “da vicino”, sia attraverso l’analisi testuale, sia grazie agli esiti della ricerca d’archivio, si alternano contributi che affrontano il tema “da lontano”, secondo le procedure della verifica quantitativa e della sua visualizzazione grafica. Entrambe le prospettive sono ormai indispensabili, e tra loro complementari: la proposta critica del libro è soprattutto un auspicio di una loro interrelazione più stretta nelle concrete prassi di ricerca.

I saggi raccolti in Dentro e fuori il testo rappresentano una sintetica summa degli studi di Alberto Cadioli, mettendo in risalto alcuni dei passaggi più rilevanti – dal punto di vista teorico-metodologico – di una lunga attività di ricerca. Pur nella varietà e nella dinamicità dei percorsi, queste pagine rivelano la fedeltà a un presupposto che, già individuabile nei primi lavori, è rimasto sempre presente: la vocazione aindagare i nessi che stringono chi crea il testo letterario, chi lo porta alla stampa, chi lo riceve. «Fuori» e «dentro» il testo, dunque, coltivando una critica letteraria che, nelle prime indagini, utilizza gli strumenti della sociologia della letteratura e della storia dell’editoria, e poi via via quelli della filologia, in particolare dei testi a stampa e della filologia d’autore.Dall’editoria alla filologia, dunque, con l’obiettivo di approfondire la storia dei testi e della loro trasmissione, la storia della loro genesi e della mediazione editoriale che li ha portati ai lettori nelle forme di un oggetto storicamente e materialmente definito. Le riflessioni teoriche e le indicazioni metodologiche dei saggi qui proposti hanno spinto Cadioli a percorrere sentieri scarsamente battuti, a suggerire indirizzi diricerca nuovi sui quali sono cresciuti e consolidati nuovi orientamenti critici, ormai radicati nel panorama degli studi sull’Otto-Novecento letterario.
