In un suo scritto autobiografico Lillian Hellman racconta di avere costantemente avuto una incontrollabile ed inspiegabile attrazione verso i reperti emersi dal mare, giacenti sulla riva, sempre nuovi e sorprendenti e collega tale propensione all'inconscio, alla sfera sommersa che porta a galla poche tracce alludenti a chissà quali materiali preziosi e nascosti, sepolti all'interno dell'umana psiche. Non ho mai ritenuto di essere così lunare e segreta come la grande commediografa americana, ho difficoltà a legare i nostri pensieri segreti ad immagini precise, li avvicino piuttosto a metafore, a sistemi del mondo in parte svelabili, a decisioni prese incosciamente e perciò fattesi atti, parole, volontà, pensieri. Rifletto però sulla bellezza delle materie lavorate dal mare: legni, conchiglie, terre, coralli ma anche gomme, vetri, plastiche, che l'acqua, il sale e soprattutto il moto ci restituiscono levigati e come provenienti da un'altra dimensione, non più resi orrendamente mutati dall'incessante lavorìo della terra e dell'aria e dunque in qualche modo apparentemente sottratti all'orrida trasformazione che attende ciò che vive, dopo.

[...]Pomezia fu inaugurata in pieno autunno, il 29 ottobre del 1939 e le rivelazioni metafisiche di De Chirico si situano in genere proprio in autunno, quando incombe presto la sera e le mura diventano baluardi che difendono dall'assurdo, dalla mancanza di senso, città o paesi che recintano la storia, la filosofia, il tempo, la razionalità, tutto ciò a cui possiamo aggrapparci nello smarrimento. Anche le città nuove, con le loro mura perimetrali, suggeriscono una barriera, un recinto, una difesa dalla vertigine del non-senso, sono chiuse, fortificate, hanno un centro che suggerisce incontro, condivisione, partecipazione. Culminano con torri e campanili che celebrano l'emergenza della politica e del sacro, una predominanza che si vanta di poggiare sui secoli passati del nostro Paese, non solo la romanità ma soprattutto il medioevo. La piazza di Pomezia, vero fulcro della cittadina, ancora oggi punto di ritrovo della sua popolazione, guarda ai comuni italiani del Duecento e Trecento, ai loro arengari, alle loro torri, pescando particolari da un immaginario, sconfinato repertorio della storia dell'architettura nazionale, coniugati poi nel lessico novecentesco. Manca alle "città nuove" pontine quel particolare e tangibile sentore fatto di isolamento e arcaismo che pervade i borghi rurali dell'incompiuta bonifica del Tavoliere e della Sicilia, qui la rarefazione è creata dai segni, non dal reale posizionamento nei silenzi incontaminati della campagna secolarmente schiava del latifondo come nel profondo meridione. Anche prima del boom economico degli anni Sessanta le città pontine guardano ad un compendio di attività e collegamenti moderni, ad una concezione dello spazio figlia del XX secolo, seppure dietro i voluti anacronismi e le citazioni
