We are delighted to provide the proceedings of the sixth International Conference on Applied Engineering (ICAE), 2023, which was conducted in Batam on November 7th, 2023. This conference, which has as its theme "Synergizing Green Economy, Sustainable Development, and Digitalization for a Prosperous Future," is a significant international assembly that seeks to integrate technological innovation, economic expansion, and environmental sustainability. An ensemble of stakeholders, comprising policymakers, entrepreneurs, and experts, assembles to examine the mutually beneficial correlation that exists between digital advancements and a green economy. The acceptance rate for ICAE 2023 stands at 25%, leading to the selection of 28 substantial papers. The conference featured three distinct tracks: Informatics, Electronics, and Mechanicals. Two keynote addresses were delivered in conjunction with the outstanding technical paper presentations at the technical program. The keynote addresses were delivered by Dr. Ir. Basuki Rahmatul Alam, Chair of the IEEE EDS Indonesia Chapter and Senior Member of IEEE, and Dr. MK Radhakrishnan, Technical Consultant at NanoRel LLP in Singapore and Vice President of IEEE EDS. Coordination effectiveness with the steering committee was crucial to guaranteeing the conference's success. We wish to convey our profound gratitude for their consistent guidance and support that accompanied the entire undertaking. The ICAE Chair Committee deserves special recognition for their conscientiousness in finalizing the peer-review procedure of technical papers, which ultimately led to the creation of a technical program of exceptional quality. Furthermore, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Conference Managers and all the authors who submitted their papers for the ICAE 2023 conference for their invaluable assistance. Additionally, we appreciate the assistance of the EAI staff in facilitating the production of this publication.

The Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) has struggled to contain gang violence because of understaffing and lack of financing. This has led to the recent accelerated deployment of additional personnel from the Caribbean and Central America. The United States has also reconfirmed its support for the MSS. The Temporary Protected Status for Haitian migrants in the United States is set to expire on August 3, 2025, unless extended.

Costa Rica successfully completed its Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and Resilience and Sustainability (RSF) arrangements in June. Growth remains robust, inflation continues to converge to the central bank’s target from below, and international reserves are ample. While one-off revenue shortfalls and expenditures have reduced the primary surplus for 2024, policies remain consistent with the fiscal rule and fiscal consolidation is expected to resume next year. The authorities remain committed to a broad range of reforms, including those aimed at institutionalizing the progress they have achieved under the EFF and RSF programs.

The incidence of anthropogenic fires in South America has increased lately, and fire effects on the biodiversity and ecosystem services are of great concern. On the other hand, natural fires have been present in the continent for thousands of years, acting as an evolutionary driver of vegetation and fauna. Therefore, several ecosystems in South America are fire-prone due to their evolutionary history, while those that have not evolved under frequent fires are fire-sensitive. At the same time, as humans increase fire frequency in some environments they try to banish fire from others, and such anthropogenic fire regimes have enormous consequences for biota, ecosystem services and the environment. This book will address the various South American ecosystems that benefit from the presence of fire, but also those that are harmed by fire. The effects of fire on plant and animal biodiversity of the main South American ecosystems will be presented and discussed considering current trends in climate and land use change, bringing understanding about when and how fire should or should not be used to benefit nature and humans. Options for fire planning and management will be highlighted, especially considering the reduction of wildfire risk and the conservation of biodiversity and natural resources. This broad comprehension of the fire issue in South America will support wise decisions by environmental analysts, conservation managers and public policy makers.
