Ignorance and Change analyses the European refugee crisis of 2015–2016 from the perspective of ignorance studies showing how the media, decision-makers and academics engaged in the projection and reification of the future in relation to the crisis, the asylum system, and the solutions that were proposed. Why do recent crises fail to bring meaningful change? Why do we often see replication of the regimes of ignorance, inefficient knowledge and expertise practices? This book answers these questions by shifting the focus from the issue of change to our projections and expectations of what change will look like. Building on three comprehensive case studies, Poland, Hungary, and Romania, it demonstrates how ignorance and projectivity were essential for new Member States not only for managing the crisis but also for reaching a higher level of autonomy in relation to the EU. Employing an innovative interactional approach to ignorance, it bridges ignorance studies with sociology of future and migration research. Challenging the dominant interest in defining ignorance, it moves the focus from what ignorance is to what ignorance does. It incorporates the concept of future into ignorance studies and develops notions such as “projective agency,” “reification of the future,” “projection by proxy,” and “projectors of EU asylum policies.” The book provides an erudite background, comprehensive empirical research, and original tools of analysis for graduate students, researchers, and policy makers interested in crisis studies, public policy, ignorance studies, social theory, migration studies, and sociology of the future.

An introduction to the new area of ignorance studies that examines how science produces ignorance—both actively and passively, intentionally and unintentionally. We may think of science as our foremost producer of knowledge, but for the past decade, science has also been studied as an important source of ignorance. The historian of science Robert Proctor has coined the term agnotology to refer to the study of ignorance, and much of the ignorance studied in this new area is produced by science. Whether an active or passive construct, intended or unintended, this ignorance is, in Proctor's words, “made, maintained, and manipulated” by science. This volume examines forms of scientific ignorance and their consequences. A dialogue between Proctor and Peter Galison offers historical context, presenting the concerns and motivations of pioneers in the field. Essays by leading historians and philosophers of science examine the active construction of ignorance by biased design and interpretation of experiments and empirical studies, as seen in the “false advertising” by climate change deniers; the “virtuous” construction of ignorance—for example, by curtailing research on race- and gender-related cognitive differences; and ignorance as the unintended by-product of choices made in the research process, when rules, incentives, and methods encourage an emphasis on the beneficial and commercial effects of industrial chemicals, and when certain concepts and even certain groups' interests are inaccessible in a given conceptual framework. Ignorance and Uncertainty overviews a variety of approaches to the problem of indeterminacies in human thought and behavior. This book examines, in depth, trends in the psychology of judgment and decision-making under uncertainty or ignorance. Research from the fields of cognitive psychology, social psychology, organizational studies, sociology, and social anthroplogy are reviewed here in anticipation of what Dr. Smithson characterizes as the beginning of a "creative dialogue between these researchers". Ignorance and Uncertainty offers the conceptual framework for understanding the paradigms associated with current research. It discusses the ways in which attitudes toward ignorance and uncertainty are changing, and addresses issues previously ignored.

Once treated as the absence of knowledge, ignorance today has become a highly influential topic in its own right, commanding growing attention across the natural and social sciences where a wide range of scholars have begun to explore the social life and political issues involved in the distribution and strategic use of not knowing. The field is growing fast and this handbook reflects this interdisciplinary field of study by drawing contributions from economics, sociology, history, philosophy, cultural studies, anthropology, feminist studies, and related fields in order to serve as a seminal guide to the political, legal and social uses of ignorance in social and political life. Change, everything is forever changing and so humanity must change now. The biggest enemy to change is ignorance and therefor, this book identifies the elements of ignorance and helps to break the chain's of ignorance, which hold us captive to bring about lack and limitation. This book is information transfer and it will help the reader to become spiritualised and empowered to differentiate between the dominating powers in humanity being the power of good and bad. Two power consciousness is destructive, whereas, One Power Consciousness of God and good is creative. We come to appreciate that the human experience is dominated by power and unless we obtain God Power we will continue to be slaves to ignorance with lack and limitations and a belief in two powers of God and evil. This must change, in order for us to be the ultimate winner in the end game, as we behold the inevitable fall of this system of things a being unfit for purpose.

The Power Of Ignorance written by David H. Swendsen and has been published by Xlibris Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-28 with Nature categories.

According to Webster, power is “to be able, to have the ability to act, to have the capacity to influence, and to have the authority to control others.” Every day of the week our TVs and newspapers go nonstop telling us about the power of the press, black power, white power, and the power of the spoken word. This book is about another overwhelming power that can and sometimes does change the world we humans live in. On the pages of this book, the author, David Swendsen, who has spent his whole life protecting our natural resources, believes that the biggest enemy he and our fading resources face is the power of ignorance. Early in this book, former state and federal officer and later university instructor, Swendsen, describes just how some of our former world leaders previously made use of the power of ignorance to accumulate a great deal of power. Swendsen states, “Having acquired and confronted my share of ignorance in my lifetime, I feel I am qualified to attempt to point out how IGNORANCE has affected we human’s existence here on this changing planet.” The book discusses lies and liars and includes quotes that were made by former leaders. In the book, Winston Churchill’s quote is, “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to put its pants on.” Being creatures of habit makes us humans vulnerable to ignorance. “Because we have always done it that way,” we don’t want to change. The book defines two kinds of ignorance and explains how many leaders use ignorance to gain the power they need to control people. Many people call this salesmanship. It appears that all leaders mostly use sales talk to lead regardless of how they sell their programs. Not all leaders use ignorance as their method of gaining a following. Some leaders promise jobs, and some promise but don’t follow through. Some vocally downgrade their rivals. Some use religion. Some use their salesmanship toward gathering male or female followers. Some promise financial gain. George Bush used the false assumption that Iraq had nuclear weapons to justify the disastrous decisions to go to war. Those in Congress who continually disclaim the effects of climate change and those leaders, including President Donald Trump, who have claimed climate change a hoax and that human beings are not involved in our recent more violent and more frequent storms, tornadoes, floods, and overwhelming weather-related disasters, are doing so to gain money and power. In fact, their actions or nonactions are putting our planet earth in jeopardy of becoming unlivable for our children’s children. Most human beings are born with a wonderful gift of human intelligence. This helps develop a lifelong determination to succeed in our daily affairs, such as to preserve our underlying health and to maintain our needed self-esteem. We, because of this intelligence gift, can deal with most difficult situations. But if we put our faith in the hands of any leader or proposed leader and that leader lies to us or abandons us, depression can be the result. We now may be overpowered by what I call the ignorance trap. President Trump’s overwhelming raid on environment safety measures, attitude toward sensible gun regulations, immigration, his wall, and relaxing the protection of federal lands and waters jeopardize the lives of all humans. The scientist suggests A-F needed changes to override the power of ignorance. End if the book describes firsthand experiences with “power of ignorance” leaders . . .

The Advantages of Ignorance is a short essay by Frank Wigglesworth Clarke. Frank Wigglesworth Clarke (March 19, 1847 - May 23, 1931) of Boston, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C. was an American scientist and chemist. Sometimes known as the "Father of Geochemistry," Clarke is credited with determining the composition of the Earth's crust. He was a founder of The American Chemical Society and served as its President, 1901. Professor Clarke was the first theorist to advance a hypothesis regarding the evolution of elements. This concept emerged early in his intellectual career. His "Evolution and the Spectroscope" (1873) appear in Popular Science Monthly. It noted a parallel evolution of minerals, accompanying that of plant life. He was known for pushing mineral analysis beyond analytical results. He sought compilations of the associations, alterations, and syntheses of each mineral sample. His study Constants of Nature (Smithsonian Institution 1876) was one of the first collections of both physical and chemical constants. The USGS's Atomic Weights series became standard references for the chemistry and geochemistry professions and academic fields. Clarke was also an academic collaborator. His Data on Geochemistry became a means of collecting peer professional efforts for common use across five successive editions. Beginning with his Constitution of silicates (1895), Professor Clarke advanced a methodology of geochemical analysis which described a mineral's composition through fact coordination. Priority was placed on contextualizing the research by describing constitution, structure and relationship with other minerals. The mineral sample's natural history was the end goal, a means of articulating the mineral's alteration products and pseudomorphs as a record of chemical change. To this record Clarke added the artificial history record available in the laboratory. The natural and artificial histories, combined, created what Clarke called the "constitution of a mineral." The constitution of a mineral was best summarized by, in the words of Clarke, "a good formula" which " . . . indicates the convergence of knowledge; if it fulfills that purpose it is useful, even though it may be supplanted at some later day by an expression of still greater generality." Clarke authored one of the first governmental reports on the teaching of science in the United States. The report was sponsored by the US Commissioner of Education in 1878 and titled: "Report on the teaching of chemistry and physics in the United States." It was printed by the Government Printing Office in Washington, DC. Clarke's stated purpose in writing the report was to "state the facts, and secondly, to point out defects and remedies--to show on the one hand what is, and on the other what ought to be" (p. 377) relative to the teaching of chemistry and physics in the United States. The report was exhaustive, spanning secondary institutions, normal schools, and more than 350 colleges and universities. In 1908 the first edition of Clarke's work, The Data of Geochemistry (Survey Bulletin no. 330), was published while he was the Chief Chemist at the U.S. Geological Survey. Clarke's fifth edition of this bulletin was released in 1924; the year he retired. Professor Clarke was also an early pioneer (1891) of work efficiency studies, using the theory of probability and least squares as the basis for work review.
