L’ineludibilità del corpo, l’urgenza incontenibile con la quale oggi si afferma con sempre maggiore insistenza, non è il prodotto della sovraesposizione mediale a cui va incontro la dimensione della fisicità nella società dello spettacolo. Le ragioni di una simile eccedenza, semmai, vanno ricercate in una trama ben più intricata di eventi e relazioni a cui gli studi proposti in questo volume – animati da uno slancio interculturale – offrono, se non una soluzione, un possibile approccio. Il corpo esotico venduto e acquistato nei circuiti del sesso commerciale nelle strade delle nostre città. Il corpo temuto e, dunque, denigrato e vilipeso, perché assurto a simbolo di un’alterità inconciliabile con l’Occidente. E, ancora, il corpo sottomesso, subalterno, oltraggiato. Il corpo silente, tacitato, di chi si è trovato a misurarsi con la dimensione dell’orrore e dell’indicibile e che appare oramai denudato, oltre che dei diritti, di ogni valenza umana. Corpi apparentemente relegati negli interstizi più oscuri della nostra modernità che interpellano e inducono a guardare alle matrici storiche, politiche e sociali della sofferenza di cui sono emblema. Ma, allo stesso tempo, corpi che recano incise nella carne memorie scomode che scardinano orizzonti morali e culturali che pensavamo acquisiti. Partendo dall’esperienza di ricerca nel campo delle migrazioni maturata dall’Autrice nel corso degli ultimi quindici anni, il volume propone un affresco di largo respiro sui processi di costruzione dell’alterità nella società contemporanea attraverso una prospettiva che coniuga l’analisi dei fenomeni e delle storie – a partire da alcuni casi-studio – con la riflessione teorica a carattere sociale.

For over thirty years, modern Italy was plagued by ransom kidnappings perpetrated by bandits and organized crime syndicates. Nearly 700 men, women, and children were abducted from across the country between the late 1960s and the late 1990s, held hostage by members of the Sardinian banditry, Cosa Nostra, and the ’Ndrangheta. Subjected to harsh captivities and psychological abuse, the victims spent months and even years in isolation while law enforcement and the state struggled to find them. Ransom Kidnapping in Italy examines this Italian criminal phenomenon. Alessandra Montalbano argues that abduction is a key vantage point from which to understand modern Italy: it troubled the law, terrified society, ignited juridical and parliamentary debates, and mobilized citizens. Bringing together archival and media materials with the victims’ accounts and diverse forms of cultural response, the book examines ransom kidnapping through the lenses of historiography, law, literary criticism, trauma studies, phenomenology, and political philosophy. Ransom Kidnapping in Italy traces how and at what price Italians became aware of living in a country that was being blackmailed by criminal organizations that arguably jeoparded the nation even more than terrorism.
