Il volume prende le mosse dall'analisi del dialogo sull'amore gli "Asolani" di Pietro Bembo che, uscito nel 1505, diventò uno dei testi fondamentali per il dibattito sull'amore e sulle donne in tutta Europa. Negli "Asolani" viene individuata una doppia prospettiva (una canonica e una più segreta e inquieta) che investe tutti i temi principali: l'amore, la poesia e la corte. L'autrice valorizza i ricchi riferimenti figurativi presenti nel testo, e formula l'ipotesi che la sua doppia struttura sia analoga a quella dei ritratti doppi (o ritratti con coperchio) prodotti in Italia fra Quattro e Cinquecento (da Piero della Francesca, Leonardo, Lorenzo Lotto...). Ritratti che sfidano i limiti della letteratura e della pittura, della lettura e della visione, per creare un prodotto sofisticato, che crea una duplice prospettiva sul soggetto rappresentato. Questo grande genere della pittura rinascimentale viene a collocarsi in un nuovo quadro interpretativo, che mette in gioco lo statuto stesso del rapporto fra poesia, pittura e mondo del corpo e degli oggetti.

Most modern historians perpetuate the myth that Giuliano de' Medici (1479–1516), son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, was nothing more than an inconsequential, womanizing hedonist with little inclination or ability for politics. One of the most remarkable artistic achievements of the Mughal Empire was the emergence in the early seventeenth century of portraits of identifiable individuals, unprecedented in both South Asia and the Islamic world. Appearing at a time of increasing contact between Europe and Asia, portraits from the reigns of the great Mughal emperor-patrons Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan are among the best-known paintings produced in South Asia. In the following centuries portraiture became more widespread in the visual culture of South Asia, especially in the rich and varied traditions of painting, but also in sculpture and later prints and photography. We expect transparency from, for instance, political institutions, corporations, and the media. But how did it become such a powerful—and global—idea? From ancient glass to Apple’s corporate headquarters, this book is the first to probe how Western people have experienced, conceptualized, and evaluated transparency. Daniel Jütte argues that the experience of transparency has been inextricably linked to one element of Western architecture: the glass window. Windows are meant to be unnoticed. Yet a historical perspective reveals the role that glass has played in shaping how we see and interpret the world. A seemingly “pure” material, glass has been endowed, throughout history, with political, social, and cultural meaning, in manifold and sometimes conflicting ways. At the same time, Jütte raises questions about the future of vitreous transparency—its costs in terms of visual privacy but also its ecological price tag in an age of accelerating climate change.
