Nineteenth-Century Italian Women Writers and the Woman Question focuses on the literary, journalistic and epistolary production of Italian woman writer Neera, pseudonym for Anna Radius Zuccari, one of the most prolific and successful women writers of late nineteenth-century Italy. This study proposes to bring Neera out of the shadows of literary marginality to which she has long been confined by analyzing her contribution to literary and cultural debates as testimony to the pivotal role she played in the creation of a female literary voice within the Italian fin-de-siècle context. Drawing from the Anglo-American feminist critical tradition; modern Italian feminist theory on the maternal order and sexual difference; and a close reading of Neera’s literary, theoretical and epistolary writings this volume examines Neera’s work from a three-pronged perspective: as promoter of a maternal order in contrast to the existent paternal order, as one of few women writers to participate actively in Italy’s verismo movement and as epistolary correspondent of leading representatives within fin-de-siècle Italian literary and journalistic circles. Nineteenth-Century Italian Women Writers and the Woman Question represents the first monographic volume in English dedicated exclusively to this important Italian woman writer, repositioning her within the Italian literary landscape and canon.

Chetilin Salvi nasce il 4 settembre 2003. La sua è stata un’infanzia altalenante fra tranquillità e confusione. La sua adolescenza è stata una lotta contro sé stessa. Dopo la morte dello zio inizia a stare male fino a dover essere ricoverata per anoressia, depressione e ansia sociale. Nonostante il brutto momento è proprio in quel posto che inizia a scoprire la sua vera natura, la sua più nascosta che cercava in ogni modo di uscire fuori. In quel reparto scopre il femminismo grazie alla sua insegnante di poesia, ormai grande amica, e inizia a scrivere il suo libro. Oggi sta bene, è felice di essere viva e di poter continuare a lottare per ciò che ama di più, la libertà.

La Trattativa Stato-Mafia e le sentenze emesse hanno riportato all’attenzione il tema della “contaminazione”, evidenziato in diversi dibattiti da studiose/i, giornaliste/i e magistrate/i, invitando a un approccio al fenomeno “più da vicino”. A una narrazione a partire da sé e dalla consapevolezza, anche non espressa, di complicità e ambivalenze personali nei confronti del fenomeno mafia. La pandemia ha amplificato le risonanze di termini quali “contagio”, “infezione”, “contaminazione”, non più parole astratte ma inscritte nei corpi, diventate esperienze intime, confermando una verità ineluttabile: che l’idea di purezza, di isolamento, di protezione, di non complicità col sistema in cui viviamo è saltata e siamo esposti gli uni agli altri. Partendo da queste considerazioni, è stato chiesto a donne di diversa provenienza di raccontare la propria esperienza reale o immaginaria. “Non vogliamo concetti o recensioni di saggi; né teorie, se non come risultato contingente del partire da sé. Vogliamo luoghi, date, pensieri incarnati”, abbiamo specificato. Non pretendiamo una conoscenza esperta delle mafie, ma aspiriamo a condividere la voglia e il rischio di mettersi in gioco, convinte che nei grumi delle singole microstorie, nelle contraddizioni irrisolte, nelle ambivalenze, è possibile rintracciare radici collettive che, se raccontate e condivise, possono dare esistenza ad altre narrazioni inedite.
