Il volume intende mostrare e dimostrare che la chiesa ha ricevuto da Cristo il mandato di assumere e continuare la sua stessa missione salvifica. Una missione, che è allo stesso tempo la “mission”, l’essenza, il fondamento, la ragion d’essere del suo esistere. Avendo ricevuto un incarico da parte di Gesù la chiesa, di tutti i tempi e di ogni luogo, ha il dovere – verso di lui e verso i destinatari della missione – di mantenersi fedele, di non venir meno, di non alienarsi dal suo compito. Dire “missione della chiesa” significa dire sia della chiesa nel suo insieme, la chiesa corpo di Cristo, sia di ogni singolo cristiano in quanto membro di tale corpo. Per quanto variegate possano essere le esistenze dei milioni di credenti in Cristo sulla faccia della terra, il loro fine ultimo - in quanto cristiani - è lo stesso della chiesa; si tratta dell'unica e medesima missione

Non sempre ai lettori della Bibbia risulta evidente se vi sia un fil rouge che collega tutti i suoi libri, dal primo all'ultimo. Se volessimo indicare un argomento che aiuti a comprendere l'omogeneità delle Sacre Scritture dalla prima all'ultima pagina potremmo, in parole povere, sintetizzarlo come "il rapporto di Dio con l'umanità". Nella sua relazione con gli uomini Dio si è servito di una serie di mediatori alla fine della quale Dio stesso si è fatto mediatore di se stesso in Gesù di Nazaret. Egli, dopo aver compiuto la sua (peculiare) missione, ha incaricato i suoi discepoli di continuarla nel mondo. La chiesa rimane così – comprenderà alla fine il lettore biblico – ad agire come mediatrice di Dio nel suo rapporto con gli esseri umani. E l'auspicio è che questo sia anche ciò che il presente volume riuscirà a trasmettere al suo lettore
