Il mondo di ieri è il testamento spirituale che Zweig consegna alle generazioni a venire, un’analisi lucida e appassionata della tragica eredità in cui affonderanno le radici del «mondo di domani»: il nostro. Stefan Zweig (Vienna, 1881–Petrópolis, 1942) crebbe nella Vienna di fine Ottocento, ed esordì giovanissimo sulla scena letteraria. Autore di raffinata formazione culturale e artistica, scrisse novelle, romanzi, poesie, opere teatrali, saggi letterari e biografie storiche, e conobbe uno straordinario successo mondiale tra gli anni Venti e Trenta. Dopo l’ascesa al potere del nazismo, Zweig – le cui opere furono bruciate nei roghi dei libri del 1933 – dovette rifugiarsi, essendo di origine ebrea, in Inghilterra, poi a New York e infine in Brasile. Morì suicida nel febbraio del 1942.
