Subito dopo la crisi di Cuba, che aveva portato il pianeta sull'orlo dell'olocausto nucleare, Norberto Bobbio elaborò le sue lezioni sulla guerra e sulla pace. In questo scritto inedito, il grande filosofo torinese discute le teorie con cui nella storia si è giustificata la guerra o si è cercato di superarla. Un lavoro di grandissima chiarezza e linearità, tornato oggi, purtroppo, di estrema attualità. Nel 1964 Norberto Bobbio decide di dedicare le sue lezioni di filosofia del diritto al tema della guerra e della pace. Un tema – non nuovo nella riflessione dei giuristi e dei politologi ma poco frequentato nei corsi universitari – che a Bobbio pare meritevole di essere trattato, non solo perché adatto a una ricostruzione storica e teorica di ampio respiro ma soprattutto perché reso urgente dal pericolo della guerra atomica, nel pieno della crisi dei missili di Cuba. Il libro espone e discute le varie teorie con cui nella storia si è tentato di giustificare la guerra e le diverse correnti pacifiste che hanno cercato di superarla, di ciascuna mettendo in luce gli argomenti, le incongruenze, i punti di forza e gli elementi di debolezza. Qui Bobbio avanza la sua celebre tesi circa l'impossibilità di giustificare la guerra in un'epoca in cui l'uso di armi così potenti rischia di mettere in questione la stessa sopravvivenza del genere umano. Un testo destinato a diventare imprescindibile rispetto a un dibattito contemporaneo spesso non all'altezza della drammaticità dei tempi che viviamo.
