Um dos temas mais discutidos no mundo é a existência de Deus. Sócrates acreditava nos deuses do Olimpo. Platão dizia que havia uma espécie de deus criador, chamado demiurgo, e Aristóteles fala sobre o primeiro motor, um ato puro, pensamento do pensamento. O primeiro testamento apresenta algumas vezes Deus como guerreiro, já o segundo apresenta-O como um Deus de amor. A Idade Média reforçou a imagem de Deus como aquele que pune os pecadores, enquanto na Idade Moderna vemos Spinoza afirmar que Deus está em tudo e tudo está em Deus. Nietzsche dizia: "Deus está morto!". A Idade Contemporânea enfatiza um Deus customizado, Deus é aquilo que penso Dele. Esta obra reflete sobre a imagem e o processo de união do ser humano com o Absoluto à luz do pensamento de Mestre Eckhart. Ele concebia a imagem de Deus refletida na alma humana a partir da desconstrução de todas as outras imagens nela preconcebidas. O pensamento de Eckhart se expressa com a visão divina sobre "a imagem e semelhança", a qual se manifesta na ausência de imagens e de atributos. O homem se descortina para o infinito quando compreende essa ausência, concebendo em seu entendimento que é Deus quem norteia as possibilidades de caminho que levam até o conhecimento dele mesmo. Em Eckhart, a união entre o homem e o Absoluto se dá através da alma, no silêncio, e isto requer um despojamento; é preciso que ela se esvazie, se desapegue do imaginário, pois imagem alguma poderia representar Deus e descortinar o Absoluto.

This book is the edition of the Proceedings of the International Colloquium “Rhetoric and Argumentation in the Beginning of the XXIst Century” which was held at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra, in October 2-4, 2008, and was organized by Henrique Jales Ribeiro, Joaquim Neves Vicente and Rui Alexandre Grácio. The main purpose of the Colloquium was to commemorate the publication in 1958 of the books La nouvelle rhétorique: Traité de l’argumentation, and The Uses of Arguments, by, respectively, C. Perelman/L. Olbrechts-Tyteca, and S. Toulmin. But another important goal was to take stock of the state of rhetoric and argumentation theory at the beginning of a new century. It was a unique event, without parallel in Portugal and worldwide - considering its theme and its aims -, which gathered some of the World’s most renowned rhetoric and argumentation theorists: Alan Gross, Douglas Walton, Erik Krabbe, Frans V. Eemeren, F. Snoeck Henkemans, Guy Haarscher, John Anthony Blair, Marianne Doury, Oswald Ducrot, Ruth Amossy. The book includes a variety of very important contributions to rhetoric and argumentation theory, ranging from those that naturally fall within the subject matter, to the areas of philosophy, linguistics, communication theory, education theory and law theory. The “art”, as it was called in the Medieval curricula, is no longer a discipline amongst others and has became, according to the view of some specialists and largely owing to Perelman and Toulmin influences, a “new paradigm” of rationality for our age, which auspiciously encompasses all fields of knowledge and culture. The book is divided into five parts: I- Historical and philosophical studies on the influences of Perelman and Toulmin; II- Studies in argumentation theory; III- Linguistic approaches to argumentation theory; IV- Rhetoric; and communication theory / education theory approaches to argumentation; and V- Law theory approaches to argumentation.

Since cinema is a composite language, describing a movie is a complex challenge for critics and writers, and greatly differs from the ancient and successful genre of the ekphrasis, the literary description of a visual work of art. Imaginary Films in Literature deals with a specific and significant case within this broad category: the description of imaginary, non-existent movies – a practice that is more widespread than one might expect, especially in North American postmodern fiction. Along with theoretical contributions, the book includes the analyses of some case studies focusing on the borders between the visual and the literary, intermedial practices of hybridization, the limits of representation, and other related notions such as “memory”, “fragmentation”, “desire”, “genre”, “authorship”, and “censorship”.
