Recently, increasing demand for butter has resulted in milk fat accounting for 50% of the value of Class III milk, and increasing milk fat yield (MFY) can positively impact profitability for dairies. Nutritional strategies to accomplish greater MFY can be multifactorial. Increasing non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC) has resulted in a quadratic effect in some studies. Previous meta-analysis evaluating dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) reported a quadratic or linear relationship to MFY. Some studies fed varying rates of DCAD with different levels of NFC to evaluate lactation performance. To better understand the results of these studies and determine if there were possible interactions between NFC and DCAD, we conducted a meta-analysis. Fifteen studies were identified which reported adequate information for the analysis. Studies included 62 observations, 60 treatment diets, and 362 cows. We hypothesized that increasing DCAD would improve milk fat yield for all levels of NFC and the response to DCAD would be more impactful as NFC in diets became greater. Interactions were tested by binning NFC into Low NFC (mean= 38.6), Medium NFC (mean=42.7), and High NFC (mean=47.1), while DCAD was a continuous variable. A meta-analysis, two animal experiments, and one data mining experiment were conducted to determine the effects of feeding reduced-starch (RS) diets and starch digestibility on dairy cattle performance. A meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effects of feeding RS diets on intake, lactation performance, and ruminal parameters. Dietary starch was reduced by partial replacement of grain with non-forage fiber sources or forages. Dry matter intake, milk, fat, and protein yield were decreased as dietary starch was reduced. Total ruminal volatile fatty acid concentration was decreased as dietary starch was reduced. Molar proportion of ruminal acetate was increased as dietary starch was reduced. Reducing dietary starch decreased lactation performance of dairy cows. The first animal experiment determined the effects of normal or RS diets and finely- or coarsely-ground corn on performance of lactating dairy cows. Milk and protein yields were reduced for cows fed RS diets, however, fat-corrected milk was increased for cows fed the normal-starch finely-ground corn and RS coarsely-ground corn diets. Ruminal digestibility of NDF was increased for cows fed the RS diets. Total tract digestibility of NDF was greater on the RS diets, while total tract starch digestibility was greater on the RS diets and the finely-ground corn diets. Cows fed the finely ground corn diets had greater ruminal propionate and lower rumen pH. The second animal experiment determined the effects of feeding RS diets by partially replacing corn grain with soyhulls (SH) or corn silage (CS), or CS and grain with SH. Partial replacement of corn grain with SH or CS increased milk fat content compared with partial replacement of CS and corn grain with SH. Partial replacement of corn grain with SH or CS increased total tract NDF and starch digestion. Diet digestibility and performance of mid-lactation cows fed RS diets by partially replacing corn grain with SH or CS was similar to or improved compared to cows fed a normal-starch diet. The third experiment tested whether total tract starch digestibility can be predicted from the concentration of starch in fecal dry matter. Total tract starch digestibility was predicted accurately from fecal starch concentration.

The transition from gestation to lactation requires numerous physiological and metabolic adaptations in order for the body to maintain relative homeostasis. For the modern dairy cow, the difficulty to meet these challenges is increased many-fold due to the large demand for energy and metabolites placed on the body by the high producing mammary gland. Milk fever or periparturient hypocalcemia can be defined as a failure of the calcium homeostatic mechanisms to maintain serum calcium around the time of calving. Though clinical cases may only arise in [approximately equals] 5% of transition cows, subclinical rates are much higher. Animals suffering from even subclinical milk fever are much more susceptible to numerous other transition disorders. Preventing milk fever by formulation of the prepartum ration may be accomplished by decreasing the dietary cation anion difference (DCAD) which can be defined as the balance between positively and negatively charged ions in the diet. An experiment was designed to test 2 diets containing t products designed to deliver supplementary anions to the diet versus a control ration with no added anions. Total serum calcium and incidence of postpartum health disorders were not affected by prepartum dietary treatment. Though DCAD was drastically different between the control ration and the 2 anionic diets, the concentration of the strong cation potassium was low across all treatments which presumably prevented hypocalcemia with the onset of lactation. Though our diets contained low concentrations of potassium, many diets used by dairymen contain forages that are high in potassium and thus might benefit from the addition of anions. An experiment of an unrelated nature was conducted to observe the effects of 2 diets containing wet corn gluten feed (46 or 56% of DM) as the primary energy substrate and tallgrass prairie hay (14 or 20% of DM) as the sole source of physically effective fiber versus a control ration containing alfalfa and corn silage. The 20% tallgrass prairie hay diet resulted in milk components and efficiencies similar to those of the control ration, but production and income over feed cost did not match that of the control ration in this situation.

This thesis is an investigation of the effect of a prepartum negative dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) diet on postpartum health, immune function, production, and reproductive performance, as well as culling risk in dairy herds. The main study was a randomized clinical trial of a negative DCAD diet, including more than 1000 cows from 4 commercial farms. Close-up pens with cows 3 wk before calving were randomly assigned to a negative DCAD (TRT; -108 mEq/kg dry matter [DM]) or a control diet (+105 mEq/kg DM with a placebo supplement). The outcomes include blood Ca concentrations, neutrophil function, postpartum disease, milk production, reproductive performance, and culling. Additionally, the diagnostic accuracy of a point-of-care blood calcium meter was evaluated. We observed a significant reduction in milk fever incidence in over-conditioned multiparous cows fed TRT. In multiparous cows, the prevalence of subclinical hypocalcemia (tCa ≤ 2.14 mmol/L) in the first 2 days in milk (DIM) was lower when fed TRT, with no differences in primiparous cows. Multiparous cows fed TRT were less likely to have more than one disease in the postpartum period, which might have contributed to the tendency of reduced risk of leaving the herd by 30 DIM, and a reduced culling risk over the whole lactation. There was a significant reduction in displaced abomasum and a tendency for lower odds of clinical mastitis within 30 DIM in TRT. Contrary to our hypothesis, peripartum neutrophil killing activity was not enhanced in healthy multiparous cows by feeding TRT. Under commercial conditions, the negative DCAD diet resulted in increased milk yield in early lactation, better reproductive performance, and reduced culling rate in multiparous cows. In primiparous cows, there were no treatment effects on milk production or culling, but treatment was detrimental for pregnancy rate. The meter assessment revealed that when used with fresh plasma, which requires additional sample preparation, the device showed some potential to classify cows as hypocalcemic, but overall its diagnostic accuracy was fair to low. Our results suggest that a negative DCAD diet in the close-up dry period should be targeted to multiparous cows, where we observed health and performance benefits.

During the past decades, the dairy industry has been challenged to find alternative approaches in order to feed cows without affecting their performance or increasing production costs. To accomplish these objectives, some options that have been implemented are the inclusion of short chain carbohydrates to replace starch and the addition of synthetic supplements to increase feed efficiency. In order to assess the impact of these strategies, an experiment was conducted to evaluate productive responses of lactating dairy cattle when they received sucrose and/or exogenous amylase in low starch diets. The results indicated that milk production, milk component profile, and feed efficiency were not significantly altered by the use of the enzyme, sucrose inclusion, or the combination of both. Comparing these results with the literature revealed apparent inconsistencies in responses to the inclusion of sugar in dairy rations.
