A 1992 conference on mathematics and science teaching focused on two specific topics: enhanced professional development for educators and better instructional materials for the classroom. Teachers, members of Congress, governors, teacher educators, professors, researchers, and policymakers shared what they believed was needed to be done to improve mathematics and science education in the United States. This booklet reports the views of the participants and the general consensus of the conference regarding changes needed in the education system. The concepts of systemic reform in education and the setting of national standards as exemplified by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics are discussed in section 1. The second section discusses the necessity of providing all children with an opportunity to learn mathematics and science. The third section reports the participants' views emphasizing courses that teach mathematics and science for understanding. The fourth section discusses the necessity to prepare teachers of math and science to higher standards of skill and knowledge. Extensive professional development to help practicing teachers enhance their skills is suggested. The fifth section examines the need for the development of better instructional materials for the mathematics and science classroom. Finally, 20 recommendations in the following 4 themes are reported: (1) standards; (2) improving mathematics and science teaching; (3) instructional materials; and (4) systemic change. A list of presenters and demonstrators and a statement of principles on school reform in mathematics and science are provided. (MDH)

School leaders have ready access to assessment data, motivating efforts to improve the numeracy outcomes of their students, but it can be difficult for principals to decide how to achieve these goals within their school's existing strategic plans and policies. Emeritus Professor Peter Sullivan brings his decades of experience and research in mathematics teaching and education to a carefully curated selection of proven practices and effective approaches that will help school leaders empower teachers and achieve improved numeracy outcomes for their students. With links to the OECD's Future of Education and Skills 2030 framework and the Victorian Education Department's high impact teaching strategies, the book gives school leaders insights into professional learning opportunities and high-impact practices that can align improvement visions and goals with effective classroom approaches. Quality learning experiences, lesson structure, learning sequences, classroom culture, collaborative planning and effective teaching are addressed in ways that will help school leaders improve not only students' numeracy and mathematics outcomes, but also their critical and creative thinking skills, enabling classroom learning to be transferred to real-life contexts. Leading Improvements in Mathematics Teaching and Learning provides a framework for a set of high-impact strategies that individually and together can be the focus of teacher professional learning, school improvement and student numeracy achievement.

Ambitious Science Teaching written by Mark Windschitl and has been published by Harvard Education Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-05 with Education categories.

2018 Outstanding Academic Title, Choice Ambitious Science Teaching outlines a powerful framework for science teaching to ensure that instruction is rigorous and equitable for students from all backgrounds. The practices presented in the book are being used in schools and districts that seek to improve science teaching at scale, and a wide range of science subjects and grade levels are represented. The book is organized around four sets of core teaching practices: planning for engagement with big ideas; eliciting student thinking; supporting changes in students’ thinking; and drawing together evidence-based explanations. Discussion of each practice includes tools and routines that teachers can use to support students’ participation, transcripts of actual student-teacher dialogue and descriptions of teachers’ thinking as it unfolds, and examples of student work. The book also provides explicit guidance for “opportunity to learn” strategies that can help scaffold the participation of diverse students. Since the success of these practices depends so heavily on discourse among students, Ambitious Science Teaching includes chapters on productive classroom talk. Science-specific skills such as modeling and scientific argument are also covered. Drawing on the emerging research on core teaching practices and their extensive work with preservice and in-service teachers, Ambitious Science Teaching presents a coherent and aligned set of resources for educators striving to meet the considerable challenges that have been set for them.

This report documents indicators and instruments in the context of inquiry-based science education (IBSE). It is embedded in a project that aims at disseminating inquiry-based science teaching on a large scale across Europe. Recent research about IBSE is rather specific to individual research questions and focuses on single aspects of IBSE. Furthermore, the instruments and indicators underlying the different studies are predominately not systematically covered. In this report single indicators and instruments in the context of science education are brought together. Thereby a coherent database and a link to different research results are presented. The indicators and instruments in this report originate from a systematic literature review about IBSE from 2005-2009. To receive a comprehensive picture about research on IBSE the scope of this review contains instructional aspects (1), implementation areas of politics/stakeholders (2) and teacher education and teacher professional development (3). This report contributes to supplying a systematic overview about instruments and indicators in the field of IBSE. It addresses researchers, politicians and stakeholders, teacher educators and teachers who are interested in methods of research and dissemination in the context of science education and IBSE.

This topical survey focuses on research in tertiary mathematics education, a field that has experienced considerable growth over the last 10 years. Drawing on the most recent journal publications as well as the latest advances from recent high-quality conference proceedings, our review culls out the following five emergent areas of interest: mathematics teaching at the tertiary level; the role of mathematics in other disciplines; textbooks, assessment and students’ studying practices; transition to the tertiary level; and theoretical-methodological advances. We conclude the survey with a discussion of some potential directions for future research in this new and rapidly evolving domain of inquiry.
