«In fondo, la vera materia della Storia, quel che la costituisce, è pur sempre la geografia». È su questo assunto che Paolo Pagani dà inizio al suo viaggio, in parte biografia e in parte reportage, in parte narrazione romanzesca e in parte memoir, sulle tracce di Walter Benjamin, filosofo inafferrabile, randagio per vocazione prima ancora che per necessità, intellettuale raffinatissimo e poliedrico, capace di interessarsi a «una costellazione di temi solo in apparenza inconciliabili: il messianismo teologico, i giocattoli, i romanzi gialli, l’arte, il dramma barocco tedesco, la radio, la fotografia, i nuovi media, le esperienze allucinogene con gli stupefacenti, le città e i loro misteri nascosti benché eloquenti». Eppure incamminarsi con lui attraverso le sue esperienze, i suoi nomadismi, il suo pensiero spesso impervio e anticipatore significa non soltanto seguire il dipanarsi di un’esistenza, ma anche compiere un itinerario incandescente dentro a una stagione di ferro e fuoco, dagli inizi del Secolo Breve sino allo scoppio della Seconda guerra mondiale. Significa incontrare Benjamin, dunque, ma anche le idee della sua epoca, i formidabili ingegni del suo tempo: da Ernst Bloch a Theodor Adorno, da Max Horkheimer a Bertolt Brecht, da Hannah Arendt a Joseph Roth e moltissimi altri. E quel cammino che Pagani ha ripercorso quasi passo passo per infiniti anfratti d’Europa non poteva che cominciare dalla fine, dalla stanza numero 4 dell’hotel di Port-Bou, al confine tra Francia e Spagna, dove intorno alle dieci di sera del 26 settembre 1940, sopraffatto dalla tragedia della Storia e dalle assurdità degli uomini, il dottor Walter Benjamin ingoia una dose letale di pillole di morfina e muore. A un soffio dalla salvezza e per sempre ignaro dell’ultima, feroce beffa della sorte. Figlio indisciplinato e renitente di un grand seigneur, uomo sfortunatissimo e totalmente sprovvisto di senso pratico, marxista eterodosso e libertario, filosofo atipico e sincopato, indagatore della modernità capitalista, critico letterario sopraffino, traduttore di Baudelaire e Proust, teorico rivoluzionario molto sui generis, scrittore asistematico ma saggista eccelso, Walter Benjamin, classe 1892, una delle figure intellettuali più originali, inclassificabili e poliedriche del Novecento, vittima predestinata della barbarie.
