Middle classes in provincial towns around the vast archipelago mediate between the state and society and help to constitute state power. 'Middle Indonesia' is a social zone connecting extremes. This book examines the rise of an indigenous middle class in one provincial town far removed from the capital city. Spanning the late colonial to early New Order periods, it develops an unusual, associational notion of political power. 'Soft' modalities of power included non-elite provincial people in the emerging Indonesian state. At the same time, growing inequalities produced class tensions that exploded in violence in 1965-1966.

Democracy is frequently considered a single (and thus uniform) national programme. However, political structures and opportunities differ clearly in various contexts, and as such they have their own influences and consequences. The study of democracy and democratisation must be reinforced with research that emphasises local perspective over national ones, for it is at the local level that different centres of power interact and understandings of genuine democratic practices are created. It is in this spirit that this book attempts to examine the diverse problem of democracy and democratisation in various Indonesian localities, while also underscoring the importance of considering asymmetrical approaches to democratisation. A mapping of the different local regimes in Indonesia and necessary to understand how they respond to or even bypass the practice of democracy. This book, drawing on eleven case studies, reaches the conclusion that the varied local regimes in Indonesia can be grouped into five categories: formalist/elitist, consociational, pluralist/compromistic, socio-cultural, and formalist/deliberative. Through its mapping of local regimes in Indonesia, this book offer a new passion for the continued and substantive (re)setting of democratisation in Indonesia, which need not be limited to electoral democracy, but may rely on asymmetrical democracy—a democracy that understands and accommodates localities and fundamental for it development. The future democratisation of Indonesia can be truly “ in the regions, from the regions, for Indonesia”. Using such a logic, democracy will be manifested through a bottom-up process, and therefore offer the ability to jointly manages Indonesia’s unity in diversity.

Since colonial rule, the island of Java served as Indonesia’s imagined centre and prime example of development, while the Outer Islands were constructed as the state’s marginalised periphery. Recent processes of democratisation and regional autonomy, however, have significantly changed the power relations that once produced the marginality of the Outer Islands. This book explores processes of political, economic and cultural transformations in Indonesia, emphasizing their implications for centre-periphery relations from the perspective of the archipelago’s ‘margins’. Structured along three central themes, the book first provides theoretical contributions to the understanding of marginality in Indonesia. The second part focuses on political transformation processes and their implications for the Outer Islands. The third section investigates the dynamics caused by economic changes on Indonesia’s periphery. Chapters writtten by experts in the field offer examples from various regions, which demonstrate how power relations between centre and periphery are getting challenged, contested and reshaped. This book examines how style and intersubjective meanings emerge through language use. It is innovative in theoretical scope and empirical focus. It brings together insights from discourse-functional linguistics, stylistics, and conversation analysis to understand how language resources are used to enact stances in intersubjective space. While there are numerous studies devoted to youth language, the focus has been mainly on face-to-face interaction. Other types of youth interaction, particularly in mediated forms, have received little attention. This book draws on data from four different text types - conversation, e-forums, comics, and teen fiction - to highlight the multidirectional nature of style construction. Indonesia provides a rich context for the study of style and intersubjectivity among youth. In constructing style, Indonesian urban youth have been moving away from conventions which emphasized hierarchy and uniformity toward new ways of connecting in intersubjective space. This book analyzes how these new ways are realized in different text types. This book makes a valuable addition to sociolinguistic literature on youth and language and an essential reading for those interested in Austronesian sociolinguistics.
