In the mid-2010s, a passionate community of Los Angeles-based storytellers, media artists, and tech innovators formed around virtual reality (VR), believing that it could remedy society’s ills. Lisa Messeri offers an ethnographic exploration of this community, which conceptualized VR as an “empathy machine” that could provide glimpses into diverse social realities. She outlines how, in the aftermath of #MeToo, the backlash against Silicon Valley, and the turmoil of the Trump administration, it was imagined that VR—if led by women and other marginalized voices—could bring about a better world. Messeri delves into the fantasies that allowed this vision to flourish, exposing the paradox of attempting to use a singular VR experience to mend a fractured reality full of multiple, conflicting social truths. She theorizes this dynamic as unreal, noting how dreams of empathy collide with reality’s irreducibility to a “common” good. With In the Land of the Unreal, Messeri navigates the intersection of place, technology, and social change to show that technology alone cannot upend systemic forces attached to gender and race.

Developed by Ronald J. Williams over fifteen years in a formal course on Hebrew syntax at the University of Toronto, Williams Hebrew Syntax has since been widely used as an intermediate textbook in biblical Hebrew. First published in 1967, with a second edition issued in 1976, this substantially revised and expanded third edition is designed as an intermediate textbook for students of Biblical Hebrew. The guide explains the meanings of morphological categories and the way that words, phrases, and clauses relate to one another to create meaning. Expanded to meet the demands of contemporary classroom use, John C. Beckmans third edition also functions as a grammatical reference, providing updated analysis and thoroughly up-to-date cross-references to literature in the field. By providing interlinear translations and final translations for examples, the latest edition better enables students with modest vocabulary and knowledge of parsing to understand the examples and grammatical points.

Presenting work from scholars of various ranks and locations—including Canada, Romania, Taiwan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the UK, and the USA—this volume offers critical perspectives on what is often considered the most important poem of literary modernism: T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land. The essays explore such topics as Eliot’s use of sources, his poem’s form, his influences, and his alleged misogyny. Building off contemporary work on Eliot and his poem, these essays illustrate the continued importance of The Waste Land in our understanding of the last century. This book should be of interest to students and scholars of modernism and modernist poetry.

Poetry. Latino/Latina Studies. "Ivan Arguelles is a poet who does not mine the general American vein of didactic or 'therapeutic' poetry that is supposed to be of use in some way. What he creates is an expansive romantic/surrealist summoning of multiple, swarming worlds and histories. This makes him one of the most authentic poets working in English today, and one of the most beautiful in his use of language. His voice is unique, but each of his books has its own timbre, point of view; its own movement and thematic centers. In ORPHIC CANTOS, those centers revolve around the paradoxes of language and consciousness, which are understood to be at the very marrow of the human. The nature of his engagement over the past 40 years has been far more than a desire to write 'poetry'; rather, poetry is the embodiment of a complex psychic need, the air he needs to be in the life form and time he occupies. When you read Arguelles' work, you are immersed in the basic human experience. His work is a great treasure." John M. Bennett"
