A virtuoso collage novel about narrative, identity, and exile, from international literary sensation Norman Manea "One of the most eloquent living witnesses of the European 20th century, Norman Manea, at 87, has brought out Exiled Shadow, a contemplative work of fiction . . . [in] a strong, clarion translation into English by Carla Baricz. . . . A fitting summarization of a rich and deeply honorable career."--Sam Sacks, Wall Street Journal "Exiled Shadow belongs among the great, intricate, and uncompromising works of contemporary literature."--Jan Knoffeke, Neue Zürcher Zeitung (Switzerland) In this vibrant mosaic of voices, sources, and stories, the protagonist, known only as the Nomadic Misanthrope, leaves communist Romania and is reunited with his friend Gunther, an unrepentant Marxist exiled in Berlin. Their meeting sparks a spirited dialogue that endures throughout the Nomadic Misanthrope's subsequent decades in the United States. At the center of the plot is the figure of the shadow--the insubstantial shape of the exile, the wandering Jew, the death camp survivor, the individual under totalitarianism, the dark side of the Jungian personality--a figure that calls into question the boundaries of the human condition. Recalling the beloved nineteenth-century German tale of Peter Schlemihl, the man who sold his shadow for a bag of gold, this is Norman Manea's most daring work yet: an intimate record of alienation and endurance.

London, 1934. Austrian actress Elisabeth Bergner dominated the British theatre scene, poet and director Berthold Viertel shot two successful films for Gaumont British; two great actors from the Weimar era, Conrad Veidt and Fritz Kortner, became well-known faces in English-speaking cinema and the Hungarian journalist Stefan Lorant launched the first ever continental-style illustrated magazine for the British newspaper market. Exploring a phase in the history of Anglo-German relations during which the émigrés from Hitler's Germany were making their influence felt in Britain, Daria Santini traces their presence in London from around 1933 to 1935 when these characters made their presence truly felt, all while the Nazi threat loomed on the horizon.

In this “psychological mind bender,” a Kafkaesque crisis of identity transports a famous actor from 1980s Hollywood to Nazi Germany (The Washington Post). At forty-five, Hollywood film star David Caspian should be basking in his success. Instead, his career is souring as he stresses over the next generation of actors eager to replace him. Losing himself in waking fantasies, David slips through a crack in time, awakening in the back alleys of Hitler’s Berlin. He is no longer David Caspian. He has become Felix, a ruthless black marketeer. With the Gestapo closing in on him, David races against time—and space—as he fights to take control of Felix before Felix takes control of him. Witty, macabre, and utterly thrilling, The Exile is a mesmerizing novel that will leave readers wondering where reality ends and fiction begins. People wrote that when William Kotzwinkle “is the author, readers can be sure only that the book in question will be different from everything else.” But even among the award-winning author’s work, this bracing satire stands out for the sweep of its vision, full of “comedy, despair, horror and technical storytelling delight” (The New York Times Book Review). “The book becomes glued to the reader’s hands as the devastating climactic scenes pile one on another. . . . Powerful writing.” —The Washington Post Book World

At the height of the Cold War in the 1950s, the United States government unleashed covert operations intended to weaken the Soviet Union. As part of these efforts, the CIA committed to supporting Russian exiles, populations uprooted either during World War Two or by the Russian Revolution decades before. No one seemed better prepared to fight in the American secret war against communism than the uprooted Russians, whom the CIA directed to carry out propaganda, espionage, and subversion operations from their home base in West Germany. Yet the American engagement of Russian exiles had unpredictable outcomes. Drawing on recently declassified and previously untapped sources, Cold War Exiles and the CIA examines how the CIA's Russian operations became entangled with the internal struggles of Russia abroad and also the espionage wars of the superpowers in divided Germany. What resulted was a transnational political sphere involving different groups of Russian exiles, American and German anti-communists, and spies operating on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Inadvertently, CIA's patronage of Russian exiles forged a complex sub-front in the wider Cold War, demonstrating the ways in which the hostilities of the Cold War played out in ancillary conflicts involving proxies and non-state actors.
