A key feature of the 21st century is undoubtedly the increased flow of goods, ideas and people across geographical, cultural and political boundaries which has led to new dynamics and ever more complex forms of interconnectedness. In this context, the inclusion of people on the move through education is a central issue which this book addresses in an original way: it combines three extensively, yet often separately studied themes – namely access to higher education, immigration and languages. Written by both established and new researchers, the studies which make up this interdisciplinary volume shed light on the complex political, social, and cultural dynamics at play between the three dimensions in different settings. Drawing on the specific stakes related to higher education, the tensions between barriers and opportunities for (future) students such as immigration regulations, language policies and internationalization strategies are analysed and confronted with less visible yet powerful logics such as personal and professional aspirations, cultural identities or family priorities. The expansion of Higher Education world-wide shows no signs of slowing down and there is already a large literature on who has access to higher education and to qualifications that offer higher life-time incomes and status. However to date there has been minimal focus on what happens to the students once they are in the institutions and the inequalities that they face. This book aims to fill this gap in the literature. The chapters demonstrate that the students and their families are finding ways of acquiring forms of capital that encourage and sustain their participation in higher education. Contributions from the UK, the USA and Australia reveal that the issues surrounding the inclusion of 'non-traditional' students are broadly similar in different countries. It should be read by all those leading, managing, or teaching in, institutions of higher education and all students or intending students whatever their background.

In India, two critical aspects of public policy — social justice and higher education — have witnessed unprecedented expansion in recent years. While several programmes have been designed by the State to equalise access to higher education and implement formal inclusion, discrimination based on caste, tribe, gender, and rural location continues to exist. Focusing on the concrete experiences of these programmes, this book explores the difficulties and dilemmas that follow formal inclusion, and seeks to redress the disproportionate emphasis on principles rather than practice in the quest for equal access to higher education in India. Offering new perspectives on the debates on social mobility and merit, this volume examines a broad spectrum of educational courses, ranging from engineering, medicine and sciences to social work, humanities and the social sciences that cover all levels of higher education from undergraduate degrees to post-doctoral research.
