During the earlier part of the period considered, the question of slavery and sectional rivalry had not become so acute and at that time had little influence on the situation. However, by the time of the annexation of Texas and the settlement of the Oregon question, sectional rivalry had become one of the dominant factors in any consideration of measures relating to west ward expansion and even threatened to make impossible any solution of these problems.
