Long before the COVID-19 crisis, Mexican Indigenous peoples were faced with organizing their lives from afar, between villages in the Oaxacan Sierra Norte and the urban districts of Los Angeles, as a result of unauthorized migration and the restrictive border between Mexico and the United States. By launching cutting-edge Internet radio stations and multimedia platforms and engaging as community influencers, Zapotec and Ayuujk peoples paved their own paths to a transnational lifeway during the Trump era. This meant adapting digital technology to their needs, setting up their own infrastructure, and designing new digital formats for re-organizing community life in all its facets—including illness, death and mourning, collective celebrations, sport tournaments, and political meetings—across vast distances. Author Ingrid Kummels shows how mediamakers and users in the Sierra Norte villages and in Los Angeles created a transborder media space and aligned time regimes. By networking from multiple places, they put into practice a communal way of life called Comunalidad and an indigenized American Dream—in real time.

The Ancestral Remains of Indigenous peoples are today housed in museums and other collecting institutions globally. They were taken from anywhere the deceased can be found, and their removal occurred within a context of deep power imbalance within a colonial project that had a lasting effect on Indigenous peoples worldwide. Through the efforts of First Nations campaigners, many have returned home. However, a large number are still retained. Teachers of Color and Indigenous Teachers are underrepresented in public schools across the United States of America, with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color making up roughly 37% of the adult population and 50% of children, but just 19% of the teaching force. Yet research over decades has indicated their positive impact on student learning and social and emotional development, particularly for Students of Color and Indigenous Students. This open access handbook is the first to take stock of and to provide a comprehensive international interdisciplinary review of developments in living culture since the Convention on Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage began in 2003. It is based on an expanded concept of culture, as it has been used in UNESCO since the 1980s and signed by more than 180 countries. The convention makes clear the significant role of the Global South in raising planetary awareness of the importance of intangible cultural practices. The first part of the book examines the relationship between the 1972 World Heritage Convention and the 2003 Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage. The second part of the book focuses on colonialism, minorities, inequality, and the struggle for human rights. Perspectives from Nigeria, Brazil and the US show how colonialism still has a lasting effect today and what role the practices of intangible cultural heritage play in the struggles for the recognition of minorities. The third part looks at the contribution of intangible cultural heritage practices to the creation of meaning, community, and identity. How are these practices designed so that they allow as much participation as possible and lead to a successful handling of conflicts? The focus is on bottom-up processes. Part four examines several areas of aesthetics including music, dance, song, museum, architecture, and theater showing the importance of the aesthetic dimension and its contribution to the formation of individuals and communities. The fifth and final part of the book examines central problems of living culture and intangible cultural practices. This includes articles on new forms of community building, significance of digital and post-digital culture and metaphors. In the coming decades, intangible cultural heritage practices will become increasingly important for sustainable and peaceful planetary communication, to which the balance of this book and the perspectives based on it will make a significant contribution.

Das Gemälde der Virgen del Cerro, der Jungfrau im Silberberg, aus Potosí in Bolivien dokumentiert, wie einheimische Künstler während der Kolonialzeit Motive aus der Tradition der Anden in Bildern mit christlicher Ikonographie versteckten. Mit dieser widerständigen Praxis retteten sie Teile ihrer eigenen Kultur und schufen zugleich eine hybride Bild-Theologie. Deren wichtigste Elemente werden in der Arbeit mit Hilfe von Ansätzen aus den postcolonial studies, der Bild-Philosophie und der Ethnologie entschlüsselt. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Verbindung von europäisch- katholischen Frömmigkeitselementen mit Konzepten aus der andinen Kosmovision, wie den heiligen Bergen oder der Mutter Erde, die bolivianische Volksreligiosität bis heute prägt. Abschließend weist der Autor nach, dass diese Art von andiner Theologie angesichts gegenwärtiger Herausforderungen wie der ökologischen Krise erstaunliche Aktualität besitzt.
