Five freshly decapitated human heads are thrown onto a crowded dance floor in western Mexico. A Mexican drug cartel dismembers the body of a rival and then stitches his face onto a soccer ball. These are the sorts of grisly tales that dominate the media, infiltrate movies and TV shows, and ultimately shape Americans' perception of Mexico as a dangerous and scary place, overrun by brutal drug lords. Without a doubt, the drug war is real. In the last six years, over 60,000 people have been murdered in narco-related crimes. But, there is far more to Mexico's story than this gruesome narrative would suggest. While thugs have been grabbing the headlines, Mexico has undergone an unprecedented and under-publicized political, economic, and social transformation. In her groundbreaking book, Two Nations Indivisible, Shannon K. O'Neil argues that the United States is making a grave mistake by focusing on the politics of antagonism toward Mexico. Rather, we should wake up to the revolution of prosperity now unfolding there. The news that isn't being reported is that, over the last decade, Mexico has become a real democracy, providing its citizens a greater voice and opportunities to succeed on their own side of the border. Armed with higher levels of education, upwardly-mobile men and women have been working their way out of poverty, building the largest, most stable middle class in Mexico's history. This is the Mexico Americans need to get to know. Now more than ever, the two countries are indivisible. It is past time for the U.S. to forge a new relationship with its southern neighbor. Because in no uncertain terms, our future depends on it.

Two Nations Indivisible written by Jamie L. Bronstein and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-17 with Social Science categories.

While examining the arguments made in favor of egalitarianism, this book debunks the notion that the United States is now or has ever been a nation offering equal opportunity to all. In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson famously asserted that "all men are created equal." Likewise, social mobility—the idea that any child can grow up to be president—has been key to the myth of what makes America great. Yet the hard truth is that inequality of both opportunity and resulting condition has been a defining feature of America's story. Written by a comparative labor historian, this book combines economic and social history with intellectual history to reveal the major trends of inequality that have been evident in America from Revolutionary times through the present. The book opens with an introduction to the burgeoning issue of inequality in America. The following chronological chapters describe how inequality was manifest in various periods. Each chapter not only provides a full survey of the secondary literature related to the topic of inequality in the particular time period but also examines prescriptions from thinkers who espoused equality, including Thomas Paine, Thomas Skidmore, Henry George, Jane Addams, Upton Sinclair, and Harry Caudill. By assessing these and other arguments relevant to social change, the work helps readers understand the cases made for and against equality of opportunity and condition throughout U.S. history.

How two Vietnam POWs, one white and one black, formed an unexpected friendship that saved them both: “A moving story.” —John McCain Fred Cherry was one of the few black pilots taken prisoner by the Vietnamese, tortured and intimidated by captors who tried and failed to get him to sign antiwar statements. Porter Halyburton was a white southern navy flier who the Vietnamese threw into a cell with Cherry at the famous Hanoi Hilton, hoping that close quarters would inspire racial tensions to boil over. Instead, they fostered an intense connection that would help both men survive the war—and continue for the rest of their lives. An unforgettable story of courage and friendship, Two Souls Indivisible is a compelling reminder of what can be achieved, in the face of incredible odds, when we put our differences aside. “A riveting tale . . . Two Souls Indivisible joins the small list of essential tomes on the war, race, and to an even larger degree, books that describe the true meaning of heroism.” —The Seattle Times “A moving story of two men whose courage, sense of duty, and love proved greater than the depravity of their captors.” —Sen. John McCain

An unforgettable true story, Two Souls Indivisible stirringly recounts the forging of a legendary, heroic bond between two soldiers. Fred Cherry and Porter Halyburton first met in their shared cell in a brutal POW camp in Vietnam. Cherry, an air force pilot, was badly injured after his plane crashed; he became the first black officer to be captured by the North Vietnamese. Halyburton, a young navy flier, was a naive white southerner thrown in as Cherry's cellmate. Their captors hoped close quarters would inflame American-bred racial tensions and break both men. Instead, American integrity and honor flourished, and as Cherry was nursed back to health, a friendship grew strong. The intense connection, powerfully reported by James S. Hirsch, would sustain both men through the war and throughout their lives. Inspiring, heartbreaking, remarkable, and never more timely, Two Souls Indivisible shows how good people can achieve greatness in the most hellish of circumstances.

This timely, moving debut novel follows a teen's efforts to keep his family together as his parents face deportation. Mateo Garcia and his younger sister, Sophie, have been taught to fear one word for as long as they can remember: deportation. Over the past few years, however, the fear that their undocumented immigrant parents could be sent back to Mexico started to fade. Ma and Pa have been in the United States for so long, they have American-born children, and they're hard workers and good neighbors. When Mateo returns from school one day to find that his parents have been taken by ICE, he realizes that his family's worst nightmare has become a reality. With his parents' fate and his own future hanging in the balance, Mateo must figure out who he is and what he is capable of, even as he's forced to question what it means to be an American. Daniel Aleman's Indivisible is a remarkable story—both powerful in its explorations of immigration in America and deeply intimate in its portrait of a teen boy driven by his fierce, protective love for his parents and his sister.

This national bestseller is not only the guiding “centerpiece of a robust new grassroots machinery” (Rolling Stone), it is the story of democracy under threat. It’s the story of a movement rising up to respond. And it’s a story of what comes next. Shortly after Trump’s 2016 election, two outraged former congressional staffers wrote and posted a tactical guide to resisting the Trump agenda. This Google Doc entitled “Indivisible” was meant to be read by friends and family. No one could have predicted what happened next. It went viral, sparking the creation of thousands of local Indivisible groups in red, blue, and purple states, mobilizing millions of people who had never engaged in politics before. Between one and two million were inspired—they canvassed, caravanned, shouted back, and ran for office. Proof of concept: A blue 116th House of Representatives. In We Are Indivisible: A Blueprint for Democracy After Trump, the directors of Indivisible tell the story of the movement. They offer a behind-the-scenes look at how change comes to Washington, whether Washington wants it or not. And they explain how we’ll win the coming fight for the future of American democracy. We Are Indivisible isn’t a book of platitudes about hope; it’s a steely-eyed guide to people power—how to find it, how to build it, and how to use it to save our country. *All proceeds to the author go to Indivisible’s Save Democracy Fund

Brynn's utopia is shattered when she learns her life has been a lie constructed by the very government she's trusted to make her decisions for her. What's worse is learning she's the next target on their kill list. She knows to survive, she has to remove the one thing that gives her substance, security and transport, the one thing the Alliance relies on to track each Citizen of One United. Once removed, she must run to save her life - with a boy she barely knows, a boy who holds her future and heart in his hands. Now Brynn and T are truly on their own ... against the power of One United. A Note From the Author: inDIVISIBLE began as a disturbing dream in which the government had taken control of our lives on even the most basic level. As I saw the story unfold, it was almost as if the government spoke within my head, directing me in every aspect of life, invading my personal thoughts and dreams. Honestly, it freaked me out a bit. I like my freedom. I like to do things spur of the moment, and living under this type of order and scrutiny was a horrifying and yet somehow realistic idea. As the idea and the feelings of loss consumed me, I began writing the story of Brynn and her realization that her freedom had been stolen without ever realizing it consciously. Since writing the book I've had many people ask me how I did the research to write it. I didn't. That's just it. I didn't research. I left the story up to my heart. Of course, the little things I've noticed in my life and the lives of my children fed into the story to contribute to an invasive future where no one is safe to pursue their own creativity, own thought process and own identity. Probably the biggest contributor to this element of the novel is an experience I had with my daughters at a local public school when I questioned the principal about special programs for my girls who were bored and wanted a challenge. She stated, "Children at E-- Elementary are not allowed to excel." Yes, that's a direct quote. We pulled our children out of that school that day and they never returned. The introduction of tablets at my girls' new school fed into the story along with news reports I saw of principals spying on their students and schools instituting palm-scanning before children can eat lunch at school. I know I'm not alone in the belief that we are not machines. We are not property of any government entity. And yet, if we don't stand up for what we believe, what then? I guess deep down, inDIVISIBLE is my answer to that question. "I truly was captivated from beginning to the very end. The way you describe each detail as the story unfolds creates such vivid images in my mind." J. Hayes, Editor "Just so you know you made me cry, that is how much I was into your book!" J. Jones "I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very smart! I love stores that have clever plots and characters I can root for." A. Easton, Book Reviewer "inDIVISIBLE was inspiring, and taught me the true meaning of freedom and the lengths people will go to in order to achieve it." D. Fox, Book Reviewer
