In this chapter, we presented a set of classifications of indoor localization techniques. We generated categories according to measurement attribute, location algorithms, and communication protocols. The classifications presented in this chapter provide a compact form of overview on WSN-based indoor localizations. Then, based on the classifications, we introduced server-based and range-based localization systems that can be used for the indoor service robot. Specifically, we presented UWB, Wi-Fi, ZigBee, and CSS-based localization systems. From actual experimental tests, however we found that the existing WSN-based methods have their own disadvantage. That is, Ubisense system is expensive and needs heavy hardware equipment. The Wi-Fi system (Ekahau) has a low accuracy and is only useful for the room-level localization. The CSS-based system is too expensive. Thus, this chapter introduced a localization method based on received signal strength index (RSSI).

We considered the issue of indoor localization through the use of wireless sensor networks (WSN). We value not necessary the algorithm that provides the best accuracy but the one that provides a good enough level of accuracy in a simple and efficient manner. In the first part of our work we examined some state-of-the-art localization techniques that are deployable on wireless sensor motes. These techniques are evaluated to a set of criteria that an indoor WSN-based localization application must consider. In our investigation, we considered not only accuracy but many other factors that determine a suitable indoor WSN-based localization system. These factors among other things determine energy efficiency. We broadly separate the criteria list into two categories: efficiency-based and accuracy-based. We discovered that one of the techniques, Ecolocation, evaluates quite well to the efficiency-based criteria, but the evaluation of the accuracy-based criterions is not as promising. However, the inherent simplicity and potential for good performance (based on open environment results) make the algorithm quite attractive. We proceeded to modify the algorithm to improve its accuracy while maintaining its positive qualities. Our Weighted-Constraints algorithm, named as such due to the nature of the modification, performs in terms of average error 13.1% better than the original Ecolocation algorithm in an open environment. Furthermore, our modified algorithm shows it is more robust to noise compared to the original algorithm by perform on average 21.2% better in a noisy environment.

While GPS is the de-facto solution for outdoor positioning with a clear sky view, there is no prevailing technology for GPS-deprived areas, including dense city centers, urban canyons, buildings and other covered structures, and subterranean facilities such as underground mines, where GPS signals are severely attenuated or totally blocked. As an alternative to GPS for the outdoors, indoor localization using machine learning is an emerging embedded and Internet of Things (IoT) application domain that is poised to reinvent the way we navigate in various indoor environments. This book discusses advances in the applications of machine learning that enable the localization and navigation of humans, robots, and vehicles in GPS-deficient environments. The book explores key challenges in the domain, such as mobile device resource limitations, device heterogeneity, environmental uncertainties, wireless signal variations, and security vulnerabilities. Countering these challenges can improve the accuracy, reliability, predictability, and energy-efficiency of indoor localization and navigation. The book identifies severalnovel energy-efficient, real-time, and robust indoor localization techniques that utilize emerging deep machine learning and statistical techniques to address the challenges for indoor localization and navigation. In particular, the book: Provides comprehensive coverage of the application of machine learning to the domain of indoor localization; Presents techniques to adapt and optimize machine learning models for fast, energy-efficient indoor localization; Covers design and deployment of indoor localization frameworks on mobile, IoT, and embedded devices in real conditions.

As buildings become larger and more complex, there becomes a greater need for localization systems that are capable of functioning quickly with high accuracy. Location Based Services (LBS) are a general application where a person's location data can be used to easily control devices in one's everyday life. However, before LBS can be achieved, location information must be gathered. This work investigates a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) used for performing indoor localization under a variety of wireless technologies, localization techniques, and filtering algorithms. The system was required to accurately locate devices with low error, have high precision, be cost-effective, and easy to deploy in an environment. Based on experiments performed, WiFi was determined to have the lowest error overall, while Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) consumed the lowest amount of power. Fingerprinting using K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) with k=4 processing was determined to be the most accurate and precise technique. In addition, by using six anchors in an environment and applying nonlinear least squares processing localization accuracy could be improved.

In sensor network applications, measured data are often meaningful only when the location is accurately known. In this booklet, we study research problems associated with node localization in wireless sensor networks. We describe sensor network localization problems in terms of a detection and estimation framework and we emphasize specifically a cooperative process where sensors with known locations are used to localize nodes at unknown locations. In this class of problems, even if the location of a node is known, the wireless links and transmission modalities between two nodes may be unknown. In this case, sensor nodes are used to detect the location and estimate pertinent data transmission activities between nodes. In addition to the broader problem of sensor localization, this booklet studies also specific localization measurements such as time of arrival (TOA), received signal strength (RSS), and direction of arrival (DOA). The sequential localization algorithm, which uses a subset of sensor nodes to estimate nearby sensor nodes' locations is discussed in detail. Extensive bibliography is given for those readers who want to delve further into specific topics.
