Per celebrare i Settecento anni trascorsi dall’apertura della propria zecca, nel 2017 il Comune di Massa Marittima ha promosso una serie di eventi scientifici e di alta divulgazione. Con la curatela di Monica Baldassarri, è stato progettato un percorso articolato che si è dispiegato lungo tutto l’anno, prendendo avvio da una mostra allestita nel Complesso Museale di San Paolo all’Orto. È stata questa l’occasione per inquadrare il contesto socio-economico e politico nel quale presero avvio le attività della zecca di Massa, raccogliendo le principali emissioni monetarie delle officine toscane attive tra tardo Duecento e Trecento. Una valenza particolarmente significativa ha avuto inoltre l’esposizione dei conii dell’atelier massetano, insieme al contratto di appalto della zecca (1317), restaurato per l’evento. Le celebrazioni sono proseguite con un convegno di studi tenutosi nell’ex Convento delle Clarisse dal titolo “Per una storia economica e sociale della Toscana bassomedievale: le monete e le zecche”, durante mil quale sono stati analizzati con taglio multidisciplinare gli apporti che lo studio delle monete e delle zecche possono offrire alla ricostruzione dei fenomeni economici e sociali che caratterizzarono la Toscana tra il tardo XIII e la fine del XIV secolo. Questa pubblicazione raccoglie gli atti di quell’incontro di studi al quale hanno contribuito numismatici, archeologi e storici, dando conto degli esiti dei più recenti studi sull’argomento e in relazione a temi storici più ampi: dall’approvvigionamento dei metalli monetabili, alle varie fasi di lavorazione e ai relativi indicatori materiali in opifici ufficiali e clandestini, fino alle caratterizzazione delle maestranze coinvolte; dalla distribuzione dei ritrovamenti numismatici fino ai movimenti in diversi settori economici. L’ultima sezione accoglie il catalogo scientifico della mostra, che illustra le coniazioni delle zecche medievali toscane, i torselli e le emissioni del Comune di Massa di Maremma, oltre alle monete recuperate con gli scavi condotti in contesti medievali cittadini. Il volume rappresenta perciò non solo un documento importante per la storia della zecca di Massa, sulla quale si riuniscono le conoscenze più aggiornate, ma anche un quadro sull’attualità delle ricerche sulle zecche e sulla monetazione della Toscana nel basso Medioevo e con particolare riguardo al Trecento, quale momento topico per la storia economica e sociale dell’intera regione.

In the late Middle Ages, Italy was one of the most urbanized areas in Europe. Its coasts, the Apennines, the perialpine area and the plains were all home to a large number of smaller towns, lands, villages, castra, and 'quasi cites'. These settlements were all very diverse in terms of demographic consistency, social articulation and economic dynamism, but together they constituted a characteristic and constitutive element of the Italian historical identity: an 'original personality'. This volume, thanks to some framing essays and a mapping of individual cases involving most of the northern, central and southern regions, aims at investigating the active research on this topic over the last thirty to forty years.

How 16th century Venetian silk manufacturers met the challenge of demand for lighter and cheaper fabric. The manufacture of luxury textiles, such as silk, was central to an Italian Renaissance economy based on status and conspicuous consumption. From the rapidly changing fashions that drove demand to the jobs created for craftsmen, weavers, and merchants, the wealth and prestige associated with silk throughout Europe made it Italy's leading export industry. In this important book, Luca Molà examines the silk industry in Renaissance Venice amid changing markets, suppliers, producers, and government regulations. Drawing on archival research and a vast amount of European scholarship, Molà documents the innovations Venetians made in manufacturing and marketing to spur the silk industry. He uncovers the alliance between manufacturers and government to promote the industry in a changing international economic environment. Through flexible laws, quality was regulated to meet the varying requirements of an increasing range of customers. Molà also analyzes state policy that favored the development and organization of silk producers throughout the Terraferma. His findings contribute in an important way to the ongoing scholarly assessment of Venice's place in the economy of the Renaissance and the Mediterranean world.

In questo volume si presentano quattro saggi assai diversi tra loro, ma collegati tenacemente da un elemento portante costituito dalla fonte scritta medievale intorno all’importanza della via francigena per la totalità della viabilità dell’epoca. Il saggio su La via Francigena in Toscana costituisce il completamento di quelli già apparsi negli Atti citati e relativi l’uno al passaggio della Francigena attraverso l’Appennino Tosco-emiliano e l’altro al suo percorso nell’alto Lazio. Si ribadisce come la via Francigena rappresenti sì un’innovazione, ma formatasi attraverso il raccordo di diversi spezzoni di strade romane, riusate in una mutata gerarchia e in un contesto storico diverso, che nel suo evolversi implicherà ulteriori varianti nel corso dei secoli, soprattutto nel basso medioevo. Il saggio di Riccardo Chellini affronta i problemi della viabilità a sud-est di Firenze, sottolineando in particolare il rapporto di continuità del percorso medievale con la via Cassia di epoca romana imperiale, anche se con un progressivo declassamento, che la riduce ad un collegamento locale con Arezzo, mentre ne viene abbandonato il proseguimento in direzione di Chiusi per l’impaludarsi della Val di Chiana (almeno agli inizi del XIV secolo), il che porta a privilegiare un andamento pedemontano di tradizione etrusca. Il saggio di Luigi Conti fornisce una preziosa raccolta di inediti e rari documenti d’archivio, che costituiranno una fonte essenziale per una ricostruzione capillare del sistema viario irradiante da Firenze, impiantato e mantenuto tra XIII e XIV secolo dalla Repubblica Fiorentina, anche mediante una dispendiosa operazione di costruzione di ponti.
