Es war das Zusammenwirken verschiedener Faktoren, welches fur das Entstehen eines Nationalbewusstseins und einer Nation in Frankreich konstitutiv war. Dazu zahlten unter anderem die Einfuhrung unterschiedlicher republikanischer Symbole (Marianne, die Nationalhymne, der Wahlspruch...), die Einfuhrung der Wehrpflicht, sowie die Schaffung der kostenlosen, laizistischen und obligatorischen Schule fur alle Kinder zwischen 6 und 13 Jahre durch Jules Ferry am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. Jean-Jacques Rousseau war bereits der Ansicht, dass es die Bildung [ist], die den Seelen eine nationale Form geben soll." Eine Nation verkorpert sich in Institutionen: Eine der Bedeutendsten ist die Schule, fur den franzosischen Soziologen Dominique Schnapper stellt sie sogar die Institution der Nation schlechthin" dar. Da eine Definition der Nation schon eine Theorie der Nation impliziert, werden wir uns darauf beschranken, Schnappers Konzeption der Nation als Gemeinschaft von Staatsburgern" ( communaute de citoyens") zu ubernehmen. Nur durch einen Sozialisationsprozess konnen Individuen zu Staatsburgern einer nationalen Gemeinschaft werden. Individuelle Meinungen und Einstellungen werden namlich innerhalb einer vorgefundenen gesellschaftlichen Umgebung herausgebildet. A remarkable development in the sociology of work in recent years has been the explosion of brilliant cross-national and cross-cultural studies in Europe examining the conditions of labor against the background of different economic systems, and differences within each of the major free market, mixed welfare, and planned economic systems that dot the European landscape. In Vienna and Budapest in particular, a group of intellectual workers have gotten together for what can only be described as breakthrough studies in the conditions and purposes of work in post-industrial society. The question of new forms of work organization focuses on job satisfaction, participatory democracy in the work place, levels of productivity, and issues of health and safety in the occupational environment. That these elements are important have long been known. But what this collection of studies emphasizes is the specific mix that produced specific outcomes. It does not shy away from dangerous and tough questions: worker control and control of workers, political participation in contexts of authoritarian regimes, and personal rewards in contexts that once frowned upon private acquisition of capital. The volume is rich in empirical studies and draws the theoretical implications that can and already have had vast policy consequences for workers in the modern " context. Issues relating to job rotation, enrichment, enlargement and autonomy, and others related to new forms of organization starting with the shop floor and extending throughout the management of the enterprise as a whole are dealt with candidly. The social character of labor, long frowned upon as a mechanism for evading bread-and-butter issues, is now recognized, East and West, as a dimension of concern that is growing precisely as the size and character of the labor sector is diminishing. This is must reading for those interested in new forms of social and policy synthesis, and ways of meliorating competing claims of different sectors in modern societies.

Um diese Frage zu beantworten, werde ich zum einen die Praxis der Selektion/Rekrutierung in Deutschland mit der in Frankreich und Großbritannien vergleichen und zum anderen eine damit verbundene Gegenüberstellung der alten und neuen Praxis in Deutschland vorlegen. Im Zentrum steht also auch das Interesse, ob eine Angleichung an die Praxis der beiden anderen Länder stattfindet. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit muss den nationalen Besonderheiten in punkto Selektion, Rekrutierung und soziale Auslese entgegengebracht werden. Bezüglich des Neoinstitutionalismus werde ich versuchen das organisatorische Feld bei Elitenselektion zu definieren, die wichtigsten Organisationen bestimmen und das Konzept des institutionellen Isomorphismus mit seinen verschiedenen Mechanismen auf die erörterten Organisationen anwenden. Weiterhin werde ich in dieser Arbeit versuchen Verbindungen mit anderen Theoretikern, wie zum Beispiel Bourdieu, der sich auch mit diesem Thema vor allem in Frankreich beschäftigt hat, herzustellen.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) are but two of the more recent examples of computer applications in domains previously dominated by human labour. The use of computers in such areas has increasingly attracted social science research. There are several reasons one could suggest for this, not least of them being the simple fact that public money is being provided for such research. Of course, some of the interest may be due to the wish to prove that technology is being used to inhuman ends, but undoubtedly there is also some degree of fascination involved. Can you really do all the things with computers that people claim you can? There is certainly satisfaction to be had from smugly pointing out its shortcomings, but many of the few sociologists in our own organisation are also among the most avid users of modern technology. Needless to say, they also belong to the most critical users of the technology! A new strain of motivation for social science research which appears to be gaining significance, is the desire to "re-direct" technology, or at least - and probably more realistically - to playa part in shaping future technology .
