A nationâs future prosperity is determined by the quality of its workforce. Of the many factors required, STEM skills and literacy are increasingly critical. Our primary and secondary schools are not equipping our students in STEM subjects as well as in years past. Students are increasingly opting out of STEM subjects and when they do take them, their performance shows an alarming trend towards mediocrity.Simply mandating STEM subjects will not work. A better solution is to make these subjects so compelling, so stimulating and so exciting that the student cannot help but be inspired to take up these subjects. This will require teachers who are confident in their discipline and are supported by their school leaders and system. If it can happen in other countries, it can happen here too.Industry is in a privileged position to inspire and lead students. Industryâs role is not just as an employer, it can play a greater role in developing a skilled workforce by connecting the concepts taught in our classrooms to real-world applications. The STEM Partnerships Forum (the Forum) has focused on three areas â Careers Awareness, Teacher Professional Development and Outcomes & Impact. School-industry programs are a rapidly growing aspect of vocational education in Australia. This study examined one of these programs. It sought to identify factors that led to the establishment of the program; the essential operational components within the program; and how the program advanced vocational education and training in the community in which it was located. Clarification evaluation was used as the investigation approach. The study identified key elements that appear to be fundamental to the successful establishment and sustainability of school-industry programs. It also demonstrated that if certain conditions are met in industry and schools, school-industry programs could advance vocational education and training in their local communities. The findings of this study have the potential to influence the design and development of future school-industry programs. These should assist policy makers, employers, schools and program managers to design and implement school-industry programs that produce high levels of practical skills and knowledge in young people that enhance their employability and life chances.

In response to states' serious shortcomings in preparing pupils for the work force, this decade has seen an explosion of new contracts between schools and outside individuals and organizations. This report focuses on business-school partnerships, specifically what makes them work well and how they influence education and business. Partnerships tend to involve a gradual building of trust. Effective partnership is a dynamic process concerned with changing aspects of educational systems and formulating joint, mutually beneficial goals. Employers have strong reasons for trying to influence education, including raising academic standards, making education more relevant, and introducing new skills. Some partnerships have attempted to develop new learning styles, improve vocational education, forge new school-work linkages, broaden teachers' work experience, apply private-sector wisdom to school management, and make changes in business behavior, especially in recruitment and training. National context has strongly influenced what partnerships have been able to achieve in each Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) country. The report closes with 24 case studies describing examples of school-business partnerships in OECD countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, Austria, Germany, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United States. This book discusses how academic institutions can play a principal role in companies innovation strategy. The characteristics of University-Industry collaboration are strongly related to the social aspect of the activity of collaborating agents oriented towards a common object of work.
