The occasion for this work was provided by the recent Marxist-Leninist philosophic pUblications on problems involving the term 'information' and by the extensive discussions of ideas originating in cybernetics. Thus, the issues are quite recent, which explains some peculiarities of our ap proach. Our main effort has been toward the clarification and systematiza tion of questions on information, which arise in the context of cybernetics. Where basic questions are involved, one is brought back to traditional issues as is often the case when dealing with a novel subject. Stress on questions drawn from physics is due to the author's professional involve ment in this field. This work was written under the direction of Professor J.M. Bochenski, principally in the context of a special program at the Institute of East European Studies of the University of Fribourg (Switzerland); a program carried out by Professor Bochenski with the collaboration of Dr. S. Muller-Markus. Participation in the special program was made possible by a grant from the West German 'Innenministerium'. Over the past two decades, the tools designed to handle information became central to everyday activities of knowledge workers. The end-goals of these tools is often portrayed as finding the "right information, in the right form, at the right time". ln this dissertation I argue that personal information management tools should not only support retrieval but also how users reflect on the information they manage. Based on field studies in two biology research laboratories, I present how this reflective practice is not only a post-hoc activity with researchers steping back and analyzing their activity, but rather an evolving practice happening in the course of researchers' actions (thus lightweight). I present two systems that support Iightweight reflection. Prism is a hybrid notebook integrating streams of information familiar to researchers (paper and digital notebooks, computer and Web documents). Prism's longitudinal study highlighted the use of master notebooks to synthesize and organize the information aggregated in Prism. PageLinker is a contextual bookmarking system that lets users capture the relationships between the pages they browse without disrupting their workflow. We observed how PageLinker improves navigation and helps researchers reflect on their past browsing experience.

Reflection and information are related, but still distinguishable categories. Reflection is the category designated the special product of action of one material system on another, which constitutes reproduction in another form of characteristics of the first system in the characteristics of the second. Reflection can never be a sign f that being reflected. Information is a special form of a general bond under special conditions of a controlled system or associations of con trolled systems. Information is the bond of the control apparatus of the system being controlled with any of its elements and with the external world, and also between the control apparatuses of different or similar systems, a bond which can be realized through the agency of a signal - the sign of reflection. Information arises at a certain level of organization of matter, when control processes occur formation and control are twin categories, each of which cannot be manifest with out the other.
