How can people know what vocational education and training (VET) practitioners are doing in other countries? Often people who are finding new and different ways to teach and help people learn do not publish what they are doing. However, a large number of relevant web-based networks exist and the author was able to interrogate these for examples of current innovative practice. These websites provide resources for practitioners, including downloadable learning resources, examples of innovation in sector-specific occupations and opportunities for practitioners to share their practice in formal ways through conferencing, and informally through wikis and blogs. The literature (what there was) and web search identified four dominant trends in current teaching and learning practice, each reflecting the current international imperative for highly skilled and highly motivated expert workforces with the inherent capacity to meet the challenges of global competition, an ageing population and evolving technology. The examples that comprise the innovative practices described in this report fall into four categories: closer engagement in work-based learning; new technology facilitating learning; networks, centres of excellence and resource banks; and networks in professional practice. An annotated list of useful websites is appended. (Contains 1 footnote.) "This publication explores both the characteristics and examples of innovative teaching and learning practice internationally. It found that technologies can be used to support networks of practitioners and resource banks to foster better professional practice and help practitioners exchange ideas and resources. In addition, it is important for practitioners to be able to step back from their 'daily grind' to think about what they can do differently and how. They need to be supported to test out new resources and pedagogies in a culture of active experimentation." - NCVER website.

Effective knowing and learning for vocational purposes must take account of the wide range of variables that impact on knowledge formation and that promote learning. In light of those many variables, the formal sector of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) must constantly ask itself what it could and should do to better provide vocational learning for those people likely to pursue learning via the informal sector. This book addresses that question. Vocational Learning: Innovative Theory and Practice discusses four theoretical aspects of vocational learning that support understanding of vocational learning processes and practices: the situations of vocational learning; the power and roles of social networks and identity in vocational learning; knowing and knowledge management processes; and the implications for pedagogic practices in both informal and formal TVET systems. The book provides an overview of a series of international examples of innovative approaches to vocational educational theory and practice, and it draws on empirical research to analyze the effects of those approaches. It includes unique insights into aspects of TVET for Indigenous peoples. With a discussion of policy implications for Europe, North America and Australia, this book is an instrumental tool to understand the underlying factors that generate effective educational and workforce outcomes through effective formal and informal learning.

Technical and vocational education and training at technical schools are major contributing factors in combating poverty, unemployment, and inequality. The primary purpose of technical and vocational education and training is to prepare students and learners for the world of work and for a smooth transition from education institutions into the workplace. As the Fourth Industrial Revolution continues to create more radical changes in the labor market, experts are calling for a reform of education, including vocational education and training and adult and professional education. New Models for Technical and Vocational Education and Training is an essential scholarly research book that examines TVET and CET colleges and programs that provide intermediate skills to enhance students’ chances of employability and entrepreneurship in Industry 4.0. The book explores knowledge in respect to workforce preparation, digital skills development, teaching and learning of TVET, flexibility and articulation of TVET to respond to work-integrated learning, and reskilling and upskilling to avoid skill mismatches. It is ideal for TVET schools, academicians, curriculum designers, managers, training officers, administrators, vocational professionals, researchers, and students.

This book is designed primarily for potential and inservice vocational instructors who are pursuing a program of personal and professional development which will ensure competency in this specialty. In any state in the United States, there are a number of uncredentialed instructors who teach courses in vocational education. Although these individuals may be competent enough in their subject matter areas, there is an obvious deficiency in the foundations of vocational education. Foundations of vocational education help vocational educators lay a solid foundation from which they can better help students hold aloft the banner of the full range of education for work, which is career and technical education in its modern sense. From this standpoint, this book is an excellent textbook for undergraduate and graduate students at university settings. Appealing foundation books are normally concerned with historical, philosophical, and social considerations of vocational education. The basic principles of vocational education must be covered in these books. Such prominent elements can be found from Evans and Herr’s (1978) Foundations of Vocational Education to Gray and Herr’s (1998) Workforce Education: The Basics. This book is no exception.
