In today’s modernized world, digital technology has taken the forefront in all aspects of society, including education. Students have access to numerous electronic devices, which has made online learning materials highly accessible. These technological impacts have blurred the distinction between formal and informal language learning methods. Informally learned English has lost proficiency when assessing student performance. Sizable research is necessary to study and understand the informal methods of language learning using technology. Enhancements and Limitations to ICT-Based Informal Language Learning: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research on the implementation of technological opportunities within informal language teaching methods along with the drawbacks that limit its efficiency. While highlighting topics such as acculturation, student perception, and autonomous applications, this publication explores how learners perform ICT-based activities beyond the classroom and assesses the linguistic gains generated by informal ICT uses. This book is ideally designed for teachers, IT consultants, educational software developers, researchers, policymakers, and academic professionals seeking current research on technological techniques within second language learning and teaching.

A follow-up to the successful 2013 publication about OER and language teaching, this book celebrates the many ways in which language teachers and learners around the globe are embracing the concept of ‘openness’ in and beyond the language classroom. Divided into three sections (creating and using OERs, working in open spaces, and openness and teacher development), these short, practical case studies provide first-hand information on how openness can facilitate language teaching and learning. The editors hope it will inspire teachers to explore open tools, practices, and teacher development as part of their language teaching practice.

This volume offers a rich overview of current research and teaching strategies for the integration of technology into language teaching and learning. It introduces the Planning, Personalization and Implementation (PPI) methodological framework to support educators in engaging with the theoretical foundations and innovative practices that should guide the incorporation of technology into their teaching practices. While Spanish language teaching is used as an example, the recommendations can be applied to any language learning contexts. The 13 chapters address a broad range of themes including accessibility, curriculum design, teacher attitudes, motivation, anxiety and feedback, and offer guidance on using digital tools such as podcasts, gamification and artificial intelligence. Written by an international group of scholars, this book serves as a roadmap for language professionals to effectively incorporate technology into any learning environment, whether face-to-face, hybrid or online. This book will be available as an open access publication under a CC BY NC ND licence.

Informal language learning beyond the classroom plays an important and growing role in language learning and teaching. This Handbook brings together the existing body of research and unites the various disciplines that have explored this area, in order to present the current state of knowledge in one accessible resource. Much of adult learning takes place outside of formal education and for language learning, it is likely that out-of-class experiences play an equally important role. It is therefore surprising that the role of informal language learning has received little attention over the years, with the vast majority of research instead focusing on the classroom. Researchers from a range of backgrounds, however, have started to realise the important contribution of informal language learning, both in its own right, and in its relationship with classroom learning. Studies in the areas of learner autonomy, learning strategies, study abroad, language support, learners’ voices, computer-mediated communication, mobile-assisted language learning, digital gaming, and many others, all add to our understanding of the complex and intersecting ways in which learners construct their own language learning experiences, drawing from a wide range of resources, including materials, teachers, self-study, technology, other learners and native speakers. This Handbook provides a sound and comprehensive basis for researchers and graduate students to build upon in their own research of language learning and teaching beyond the classroom.

Affectivity is essential in language learning and new ways of studying it must be considered. In this volume, the authors bring together two particularly relevant aspects of affectivity that are rarely related: the prosody of speech as the physical manifestation of affectivity, and affectivity involved in the learning process, with a strong component of (inter)culture and identity. In sum, overly narrow perspectives on affective language can only be avoided if we continue to bring together scientific and didactic studies of affectivity as a broad and diverse whole.
