On 1 March 2002, The Washington Post reported that a parallel shadow government' had been activated in the wake of September 11. The first in-depth exploration of this frightening topic, this book reveals the secret actions of this 'shadow government' in full detail, including the complete text of several formerly classified government and military documents outlining plans, secret facilities and more, making a powerful case that the 'shadow government' is more concerned with restricting American civil liberties than with fighting international terrorism.'

“A book about secrets and surveillance . . . [from] one of the great forces on the side of clarity, democracy, openness, and really good writing” (Rebecca Solnit, author of Hope in the Dark). In 1964, a book entitled The Invisible Government shocked Americans with its revelations of a growing world of intelligence agencies playing fast and loose around the planet, a secret government lodged inside the one they knew that even the president didn’t fully control. Almost half a century later, everything about that “invisible government” has grown vastly larger, more disturbing, and far more visible. In his new book, Tom Engelhardt takes in something new under the sun: what is no longer, as in the 1960s, a national security state, but a global security one, fighting secret wars that have turned the president into an assassin-in-chief. Shadow Government offers a powerful survey of a democracy of the wealthy that your grandparents wouldn’t have recognized. “Tom Engelhardt is an iconoclast . . . Again and again, he goes to the heart of the matter, drawing on his awesomely wide reading, his knowledge of history, and his acute political radar system.” —Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold’s Ghost and Mirror at Midnight “This collection, focused on the new Orwellianism, is some of the finest writing and finest public service gathered together in book form for your portable pleasure and outrage.” —Rebecca Solnit of Call Them by Their True Names “Tom Engelhardt’s writing on the new forms of government surveillance is crucial because he has spent a lifetime studying the rise of the national security state.” —Juan Cole, professor of history at the University of Michigan

The Shadow Government is a spell-binding novel depicting a very true-to-life picture of what the future may hold as the world moves into the 21st Century. When Norm Shepard, an ex-Marine, is found shot in the back only minutes away from the nation's capital, this sets into motion an investigation that reveals a chilling discovery. The terrorists are already here-not only in Washington, D.C. but throughout the U.S., the plan is set, and the biological agent is on its way. Emergency meetings are called, but it becomes clear that the U.S. is totally unprepared for a crisis of this magnitude. As the enormity of the threat and its ramifications set in, President Robert Hardy assigns Ross Chambers, an intelligence officer, another mission-the closest guarded secret in Washington-the Bluelight Project. The President, without the knowledge or consent of Congress, has been secretly funding the construction of underground protective relocation facilities. Ross is racing against the clock and the very future of the country is at stake. Either the terrorists are apprehended before they can strike or the Bluelight Project must be fully operational before they do-or there may no longer be a United States of America.

Why has U.S. national security policy scarcely changed from the Bush to the Obama administration? And why does it matter? The theory of 'double government' posed by the 19th century English scholar Walter Bagehot suggests a disquieting answer. The public is encouraged to believe that the presidency, Congress, and the courts make security policy. That belief sustains these institutions' legitimacy. Yet their authority is largely illusory. National security policy is made, instead, by a 'Trumanite network' of several hundred members that is largely concealed from public view.

Governing In The Shadows written by Paula Cristina Roque and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-01 with Political Science categories.

This book traces three decades of securitization in Angola. As a governing strategy during war and peacetime, it muted the aspirations of those on opposing sides, distorted the state, emboldened elites and redefined the identity of Angolans. Through this lens, Paula Cristina Roque provides an original account of Angola's post-conflict state-building. Securitization protected the interests of President dos Santos, the ruling MPLA party and the elites supporting the regime. Angola's array of security forces and infrastructure provided an alternative to a fully functioning executive, at national, provincial and local levels. The intrusive way in which any form of dissent or activism was crushed allowed the presidency to control the direction and narrative of the post-war years. But the facade of democracy, development and stability hid a very different reality for the majority of Angolans, who remained poor, disenfranchised and marginalized. Roque explores the inner workings of the intelligence services, army and presidential guard, explaining the trajectory of a survivalist and fearful regime presiding over scarcities and injustices. She shows that the survival of national security and governing elites was the highest priority. The 'shadows' held far more power than institutions, and weakened them-widening the gap between government and governed.
