Salaf adalah sebutan untuk generasi perdana umat Muhammad yang ijabah (menerima dakwah Nabi) yakni terdiri atas: (1) Nabi Muhammad sendiri, (2) ± 114.000 Shahabat Nabi yang orang terakhirnya wafat pada 120 H., (3) ratusan ribu orang Tabi'in yang orang terakhirnya wafat pada 170 H., termasuk di dalamnya adalah Imam Abu Hanifah dan para muridnya, (4) lebih dari 1 juta orang Tabi' Tabi'in yang orang terakhirnya wafat pada 220 H., termasuk di dalamnya Al-Junaid Al-Baghdadi dan Al-Hasan Al-Bashri dan ketiga imam madzhab beserta para muridnya. Itu semua adalah Salaf. Imam Malik bin Anas, salah seorang Tabi' Tabi'in mengemukakan, “Tidaklah akan baik generasi akhir umat ini kecuali dengan apa yang telah membuat baik generasi awalnya (Salaf)…” Narasi ini menginspirasi saya untuk menyusun buku Inspirasi Mindset Salaf untuk Pengembangan Pendidikan Modern. Buku ini mengupas 115 ayat suci Al-Qur`an, 457 hadits Nabi dan qaul Salaf yang menjadi inspirasi pendidikan modern.

Jadzab menurut bahasa berasal dari fi'l madhi: جَذَبَ-يَجْذِبُ–جَذْبًا yang berarti “menarik”. Sedangkan al-majdzub/اَلْمَجْذُوْبُ adalah bentuk Isim maf'ulnya yang berarti “orang yang ditarik oleh Allah”. Kitab Az-Zuhd karya Al-Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, kitab Hilyah Al-Auliya` karya Al-Imam Abu Nu'aim, Shifah Ash-Shafwah karya Al-Imam Ibnu Al-Jauziyy dan kitab-kitab lainnya mencatat banyak sekali potret keberagamaan generasi Salaf yang mungkin bagi kita aneh karena tidak biasa kita lihat pada masa sekarang. Buku Wali Jadzab Jazirah 'Arab merekam gaya Islam generasi Salaf yang khas dari beberapa kitab tersebut. Kita tidak berhak mempersalahkan ketiga ulama tersebut dan ulama lainnya yang mencatat amaliyah 'asing' generasi Salaf sebab mereka bukan orang bodoh.
