Integration Of Pharmaceutical Discovery And Development written by Ronald T. Borchardt and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-01-19 with Science categories.

In the late 1980s, it became painfully evident to the pharmaceutical industry that the old paradigm of drug discovery, which involved highly segmented drug - sign and development activities, would not produce an acceptable success rate in the future. Therefore, in the early 1990s a paradigm shift occurred in which drug design and development activities became more highly integrated. This new str- egy required medicinal chemists to design drug candidates with structural f- tures that optimized pharmacological (e. g. , high affinity and specificity for the target receptor), pharmaceutical (e. g. , solubility and chemical stability), bioph- maceutical (e. g. , cell membrane permeability), and metabolic/pharmacokinetic (e. g. , metabolic stability, clearance, and protein binding) properties. Successful implementation of this strategy requires a multidisciplinary team effort, incl- ing scientists from drug design (e. g. , medicinal chemists, cell biologists, en- mologists, pharmacologists) and drug development (e. g. , analytical chemists, pharmaceutical scientists, physiologists, and molecular biologists representing the disciplines of pharmaceutics, biopharmaceutics, and pharmacokinetics/drug metabolism). With this new, highly integrated approach to drug design now widely utilized by the pharmaceutical industry, the editors of this book have provided the sci- tific community with case histories to illustrate the nature of the interdisciplinary interactions necessary to successfully implement this new approach to drug d- covery. In the first chapter, Ralph Hirschmann provides a historical perspective of why this paradigm shift in drug discovery has occurred.

The set of sciences which studies the design, action, delivery and disposition of drugs is known as pharmaceutical science. Its aim is to optimize the delivery of drugs to the body in order to use it to create better therapies against diseases in humans. They integrate the basic principles of organic and physical chemistry with biochemistry, biology and engineering. There are four main branches of pharmaceutical sciences - pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutics, and pharmacognosy. The biochemical and physiological effects of drugs on humans are studied under pharmacology. Pharmaceutical chemistry studies the drug design to optimize pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in order to synthesize new drug molecules. Pharmaceutics focuses on the study and design of drug formulation for optimum stability and delivery. Pharmacognosy is related to the study of medicines derived from natural sources. This book contains some path-breaking studies in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. It presents researches and studies performed by experts across the globe. Researchers and students in this field will be assisted by this book.

With a shift toward problem-based learning and critical thinking in many health science fields, professional pharmacy training faces a shift in focus as well. Although the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) has recently suggested guidelines for problem solving to be better integrated into pharmacy curriculum, pharmacy books currently available either address this material inadequately or lack it completely. Theory and Practice of Contemporary Pharmaceutics addresses this problem by challenging pharmacy students to think critically in preparation for situations that arise in clinical practice. This book offers a wealth of up-to-date information, organized in a logical sequence, corresponding to the art and science required for formulators in industry and dispensing pharmacists in the community. It breaks down the subject to its simplest form and includes numerous examples, case studies, and problems. In addition to presenting basic scientific principles, each chapter includes a self-evaluation tutorial designed to help you evaluate your understanding of the subject matter, numerical problems that provide practice in finding mathematical solutions, and case studies that measure your overall grasp of the subject matter by challenging you to craft a plausible solution to a real-life scenario using the concepts presented in that chapter. Written by authors selected from academia, industry, and regulatory agencies, the book presents an objective and balanced view of pharmaceutical science and its application. The authors' insights are extremely helpful to pharmacy students as well as practicing pharmacists involved in the development and/or dispensation of existing and new generation biotechnology-based drug products. This simplified and user-friendly book will present pharmaceutics in a way that it has never been presented before and will help prepare students and pharmacists for the competitive and challenging nature of the professional market.

It will also consider how the areas of pharmacy IT link together and can be used to enable and develop pharmacy professional practice. The book will examine pharmacy IT from an international perspective, taking into account all parts of the world where IT systems are used in pharmacy practice – namely – North America, the UK, Western Europe and Australia – and will compare pharmacy IT in the different regions. This book is from the author of Principles of Electronic Prescribing (Springer, 2008)
