The capacity of assistive technology (AT) to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities is well documented. Although promising, it is not without challenges. Historically, devices that provide mobility aids and physical supports dominate the world of AT; however, AT solution that specifically aims to address cognitive needs is scarce. The inequality of AT accessibility has left populations such as individuals with intellectual disability (ID) behind these potential benefits. This book presents six articles that highlight the need, impact, and possibilities of AT for people with ID. With the emphasis on the multidisciplinary perspectives, the objective of the book is to facilitate a better understanding of the needs of people with ID and the potential AT influences. Ultimately, we hope this book will shed some lights on this important topic and provoke more discussions and efforts devoted to improving the lives of individuals with ID through the use of AT.

For people with severe/profound and multiple disabilities, managing the basic necessities of daily life often poses myriad challenges. Despite great odds, advances in assistive technology are making a difference in these individuals’ lives. Advances in microswitches, voice outcome communication aids, and computer-based systems are creating new opportunities for living independently, improving basic life skills, and reducing problem behaviors among individuals with combined motor, sensory, and intellectual disabilities. This unique volume examines how education and rehabilitation can improve the lives of even those individuals most affected by severe/profound and multiple disabilities. Interventions currently in use and in experimental stages are surveyed in terms of how they work and their applicability to clients with various needs. In addition, it examines the characteristics of developmentally disabled populations and offers guidelines for choosing suitable technologies. It presents empirical evidence on the advances in improving interaction with caregivers, control of the home environment, handling self-care tasks, and other core skills. Assistive Technology examines interventions that are innovative, respectful of the dignity of clients, and practical for ongoing use, including: • Microswitches in habilitation programs. • Speech-generating devices for communication and social development. • Instructional technology for promoting academic, work, and leisure skills. • Assistive technology for promoting ambulation. • Orientation systems for promoting movement indoors. • Assistive technology for reducing problem behaviors. A state-of-the-art guide to a growing field, Assistive Technology is an invaluable resource for researchers, clinicians, graduate students as well as clinicians and allied professionals in developmental psychology, rehabilitation and rehabilitative medicine, learning and instruction, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and educational technology.

This book is an illustrated guide to assistive technologies and devices (AT/AD). It chronicles the use of AT/AD - technology used by individuals with disabilities to perform functions that might otherwise be difficult or impossible. In general, AT can include mobility devices such as walkers and wheelchairs, as well as hardware, software, and peripherals that assist people with disabilities in accessing computers or other information technologies. Advanced AT has coincided with the advent of personal electronic devices that could be customized for use, such as computers and smart phones. For people with disabilities, AT includes simple gadgets for the home and office, electronic gadgets and complex computer systems for the workplace, mobility aids and accessible vans for getting around and modified equipment for lifestyle needs, such as talking ATMs and strobe light alarm systems. This book empowers people with disabilities to use assistive technologies to overcome some of their physical or mental limitations and have a more equal playing field. It includes real-life examples about how people with disabilities are using assistive technology (AT) to assist them in daily tasks, and discusses emotional issues related to AT/AD.
