In freeform optics, the optimization is limited due to large number of parameters present in it. This limitation was overcome by a technique known as optimization using freeform deformation (OFFD). Though this technique proved to work well, it has left many challenges to the optical designer. These challenges are solved by providing mathematical design techniques. This implementation transformed the OFFD into an intelligent tool replacing the optical designer's efforts during the design process. This work was published by Saint Philip Street Press pursuant to a Creative Commons license permitting commercial use. The occurring failure modes within the LED package are described and predicted by the degradation of the used package materials. Based on these findings approaches for long lifetime LEDs are derived.

If the dynamic range of the eye is insufficient, glare occurs. There is no suitable objective measurement method to describe the effects on visual performance and its course. Beim Ansatz eines Laserscannerscheinwerfers zur Realisierung von adaptiven Lichtfunktionen werden sechs Laserdioden auf einen Mikrospiegel gelenkt, welcher durch seine schwingende Bewegung eine ausgedehnte Lichtverteilung auf einem Weißlichtkonverter erzeugt ehe diese auf die Fahrbahn projiziert wird. Diese Arbeit beschreibt diesen Ansatz und zeigt Methoden zur Homogenitätsbewertung von Scheinwerferlichtverteilungen. - The approach of a laser scanning headlamp for adaptive light functions includes six laser sources which are deviated on a micro mirror. The oscillation of that mirror generates an extended light distribution on a white light converter which is then projected on the road. This work describes that approach and presents methods to evaluate the homogeneity of headlamp light distributions.

Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt Möglichkeiten auf, das Ablenkpotenzial zu operationalisieren und zu quantifizieren. Mithilfe dieser Bewertung kann dann über eine Zulassung der Lichtfunktion entschieden werden. - Modern headlights are able to project any desired symbol directly onto the street. Feasible applications are driver assistance, information or communication with other traffic participants. Besides all the possibilities the risk of distraction can’t be neglected. The present work offers a way to operationalize and quantify this risk. Based on this evaluation a possible homologation can be determined.
