A growing number of universities and other educational institutions record videos of regularly scheduled classes and lectures to provide students with additional resources for their study. However, the video alone is not necessarily the same than a carefully prepared educational video. The main issue is that they are typically not post-processed in an editorial sense. That is, the videos often contain longer periods of silence or inactivity, unnecessary repetitions, spontaneous interaction with students, or even corrections of prior false statements or mistakes. Furthermore, there is often no summary or table of contents of the video, unlike with educational videos that supplement a certain curriculum and are well scripted and edited. Thus, the plain recording of a lecture is a good start but far from a good e-learning resource. This thesis describes a system that can close the gap between a plain video recording and useful e-learning resource by producing automatic summaries and providing an interactive lecture browser that can visualize automatically extracted key phrases and their importance on an augmented time line. The lecture browser depends on four tasks: automatic speech recognition, automatic extraction and ranking of key phrases, extractive speech summarization, and the visualization of the phrases and their salience. These tasks as well as the contribution to the state of the art are described in detail and evaluated on a newly acquired corpus of academic spoken English, the LMELectures. A first user study shows that students using the lecture browser can solve a topic localization task about 29 % faster than students that are provided with the video only.

Tips and techniques to build interactive learning into lecture classes Have you ever looked out across your students only to find them staring at their computers or smartphones rather than listening attentively to you? Have you ever wondered what you could do to encourage students to resist distractions and focus on the information you are presenting? Have you ever wished you could help students become active learners as they listen to you lecture? Interactive Lecturing is designed to help faculty members more effectively lecture. This practical resource addresses such pertinent questions as, “How can lecture presentations be more engaging?” “How can we help students learn actively during lecture instead of just sitting and passively listening the entire time?” Renowned authors Elizabeth F. Barkley and Claire H. Major provide practical tips on creating and delivering engaging lectures as well as concrete techniques to help teachers ensure students are active and fully engaged participants in the learning process before, during, and after lecture presentations. Research shows that most college faculty still rely predominantly on traditional lectures as their preferred teaching technique. However, research also underscores the fact that more students fail lecture-based courses than classes with active learning components. Interactive Lecturing combines engaging presentation tips with active learning techniques specifically chosen to help students learn as they listen to a lecture. It is a proven teaching and learning strategy that can be readily incorporated into every teacher’s methods. In addition to providing a synthesis of relevant, contemporary research and theory on lecturing as it relates to teaching and learning, this book features 53 tips on how to deliver engaging presentations and 32 techniques you can assign students to do to support their learning during your lecture. The tips and techniques can be used across instructional methods and academic disciplines both onsite (including small lectures and large lecture halls) as well as in online courses. This book is a focused, up-to-date resource that draws on collective wisdom from scholarship and practice. It will become a well-used and welcome addition for everyone dedicated to effective teaching in higher education.

Automatic Assessment Of Prosody In Second Language Learning written by Florian Hönig and has been published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Computers categories.

Worldwide there is a universal need for second language language learning. It is obvious that the computer can be a great help for this, especially when equipped with methods for automatically assessing the learner's pronunciation. While assessment of segmental pronunciation quality (i.,e. whether phones and words are pronounced correctly or not) is already available in commercial software packages, prosody (i.e. rhythm, word accent, etc.) is largely ignored--although it highly impacts intelligibility and listening effort. The present thesis contributes to closing this gap by developing and analyzing methods for automatically assessing the prosody of non-native speakers. We study the detection of word accent errors and the general assessment of the appropriateness of a speaker's rhythm. We propose a flexible, generic approach that is (a) very successful on these tasks, (b) competitive to other state-of-the-art result, and at the same time (c) flexible and easily adapted to new tasks.

An automatic recognition of human activities enables their use in several interesting applications of daily life. This dissertation emphases on the analysis of human activities in a visual surveillance scenario and the classification of physical activities in the therapeutic procedure using visual data. The first part of the dissertation proposes a robust gait representation to recognise the identity of a person using his/her walking style, dealing with its several real world challenges as well as taking into consideration the effects of cross-view recognition. In the second part, a complete framework is proposed to capture and analyse the movement of different body parts in human which is useful in the clinical assessment to detect any movement disorders and the assessment of the desired therapeutic program.

Posthumanism and the Massive Open Online Course critiques the problematic reliance on humanism that pervades online education and the MOOC, and explores theoretical frameworks that look beyond these limitations. While MOOCs (massive open online courses) have attracted significant academic and media attention, critical analyses of their development have been rare. Following an overview of MOOCs and their corporate means of promotion, this book unravels the tendencies in research and theory that continue to adopt normative views of user access, participation, and educational space in order to offer alternatives to the dominant understandings of community and authenticity in education.

A Practical Guide to Teaching Research Methods in Education brings together more than 60 faculty experts. The contributors share detailed lesson plans about selected research concepts or skills in education and related disciplines, as well as discussions of the intellectual preparation needed to effectively teach the lesson. Grounded in the wisdom of practice from exemplary and award-winning faculty from diverse institution types, career stages, and demographic backgrounds, this book draws on both the practical and cognitive elements of teaching educational (and related) research to students in higher education today. The book is divided into eight sections, covering the following key elements within education (and related) research: problems and research questions, literature reviews and theoretical frameworks, research design, quantitative methods, qualitative methods, mixed methods, findings and discussions, and special topics, such as student identity development, community and policy engaged research, and research dissemination. Within each section, individual chapters specifically focus on skills and perspectives needed to navigate the complexities of educational research. The concluding chapter reflects on how teachers of research also need to be learners of research, as faculty continuously strive for mastery, identity, and creativity in how they guide our next generation of knowledge producers through the research process. Undergraduate and graduate professors of education (and related) research courses, dissertation chairs/committee members, faculty development staff members, and graduate students would all benefit from the lessons and expert commentary contained in this book.
