Buku berjudul “Interdisciplinary Project-Based Learning” ini disusun sebagai salah satu produk dari penelitian dasar berjudul “Revitalisasi Pembelajaran Program Produktif SMK Program Keahlian Teknik Mesin Melalui Penguatan Implementasi PjBL dan Pengembangan Karakter Pekerja Abad XXI untuk Menghasilkan SDM Berkualitas dan Berdaya Saing Tinggi” yang didanai oleh DRPM Kemristekdikti tahun 2019. Penulisan buku ini terselesaikan atas dukungan berbagai pihak baik secara langsung maupun tidak. Penulis menyampaikan terima kasih yang mendalam kepada: (1) Ketua LP2M UM yang telah memfasilitasi dan mengkoordinasi pelaksanaan kegiatan penelitian; (2) Para Kepala SMK dan Guru Kejuruan Program Keahlian Teknik Mesin yang telah berkenan menjadi informan/sumber data penelitian; dan (3) Para sejawat dosen yang telah berkenan memvalidasi isi dan tampilan buku ini. Kehadiran buku ini merupakan salah satu upaya untuk meningkatkan pemahaman teoritik dan aplikatif tentang project-based learning (PjBL) bagi para guru kejuruan SMK khususnya, dan para mahasiswa calon guru kejuruan pada SMK dalam rangka meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran bidang kejuran. Sejalan dengan kondisi sekolah yang sangat variatif dan tuntutan dunia industri yang begitu tinggi terhadap kualitas SDM lulusan SMK, maka implementasi PjBL dapat diterapkan dalam rentangan yang cukup luas, mulai dari model yang paling sederhana sampai dengan model yang paling kompleks, yang disebut sebagai interdisciplinary projectbased learning (I-PjBL). Model yang disebutkan terakhir tersebut sengaja dipilih menjadi judul buku ini didasarkan pada harapan agar mampu mematik semangat para guru, para pengembang pendidikan kejuruan, dan para calon guru kejuruan di SMK untuk mengkajinya lebih lanjut dan berkontribusi dalam pengimplementasiannya di SMK. Tentu saja model I-PjBL juga sangat berpotensi dalam pengembangan karakter pekerja abad XXI secara terintegrasi dalam pembelajaran kejuruan di SMK.

This book addresses the relation between Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and interdisciplinarity and challenges the often implicit assumption that PBL leads to interdisciplinarity by default. The book examines theoretical and philosophical aspects of PBL and interdisciplinary learning. The first part of the book conceptualises the notions of problem-based learning and interdisciplinary learning, and highlights some key overlaps and ways of conceiving of their interrelatedness. It discusses the role of problem-based medical education in relation to interdisciplinary professionalism in medical education. Taking the reader into the realm of techno-anthropology, the book discusses the role of problems and projects in transgressing disciplines, and presents an analysis of three challenges facing new students when entering interdisciplinary and problem-based higher education. The second part of the book focuses on practicing interdisciplinarity in problem-based higher education. It explores how the construction of problems in interdisciplinary PBL projects can be seen from the perspectives of multicultural groups, and examines group processes in interdisciplinary PBL projects. It concludes by taking a closer look at student practices in interdisciplinary PBL, and at how students are positioned and position themselves in the complex transdisciplinary PBL project.

This text contains 25 Project-Based Learning (PBL) lessons written by a combination of undergraduate preservice teachers, inservice teachers, and graduate students. Everyone who wrote a chapter strives to improve STEM education to help others implement standards-based STEM instruction that takes learning in isolation to greater accountability through integrated and meaningful tasks that answer the question every teacher dreads: When am I going to use this? The PBLs were written to implement in middle and high-school classrooms. All of them are interdisciplinary in nature. This second edition of Project-Based Learning (PBL) presents an original approach to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) centric PBL. We define PBL as an “ill-defined task with a well-defined outcome,” which is consistent with our engineering design philosophy and the accountability highlighted in a standards-based environment. This guide is designed to inform the incorporation of a specific type of work-integrated learning (WIL) - interdisciplinary project-based WIL - into undergraduate or postgraduate programs. Interdisciplinary project-based WIL provides an opportunity for university staff, students, and industry partners to enhance their capabilities through collaborating in real-world problem solving. A key driver for this approach is the development of critical graduate employability skills including collaboration, communication, complex problem solving and project management. The Guide grew out of a national leadership project funded in 2019 by the Australian Technology Network. This guide provides an overview of interdisciplinary project-based learning along with examples of this in action across four Australian universities, reflections on lessons learned, and key recommendations for other staff wishing to embed this educational approach within their curriculum. The guide gives an overview of the essential dimensions required to design, implement and evaluate interdisciplinary project-based learning. This includes the views of staff, students and industry, tips for success, suggested readings and several proforma tools (see appendices).
